Chapter 8 - WolfTale

Alphys handed the book to Toriel. The goat monster began to read the text out loud.

"Long ago, way before the war between monsters and humans, there was a quiet mountain village where the two races lived among each other peacefully. Even before the war, it was common knowledge that combining a monster soul with a human's soul would create a being with god-like strength. An unnamed greedy, yet powerful wizard believed that fact to be false. He thought that a human's soul didn't need the support of a monster soul to become god-like. He thought that a human's soul is powerful enough to outweigh the power of a monster and human soul hybrid. He did experiment after experiment, test after test using his magic, but all of his attempts were unsuccessful. That is, until one day, he found out that there was a known substance that could increase the strength of any soul. It was called "determination." He did whatever he could to find it and use it to prove to the other human villagers that they are superior to monsters."

She turned the page and continued to read. "Somehow, he did manage to find a way to use it and started running tests. Everything seemed to be coming together, until one day, the villagers noticed that the wizard seemed to be missing. When they went to check inside of his home, there was nothing but thick, black smoke. It was impossible to see inside of the house. None of the villagers thought much of it-perhaps he was tired of failing and decided to just leave it all behind and run away. Others say that he died from one of his experiments, but his body was never found. But the most common and believed theory wasn't at all like the others. It was backed up by evidence. It was supported by the fact that residents would see copies of themselves or other people all around town, but when they went to go grab someone else to show them, nothing would be left besides mysterious black smoke. The smoke was him. At that point in time, they gave him the nickname of "Nouvel" because no one knows his true name. It means "new," and it was given to him because he was able to create a new form for himself whenever he pleased. By trying to gain the strength of a monster-human hybrid, he somehow managed to lose his original form, thus turning him into forever changing black smoke. This should be a lesson to whomever reads this to never trust a person too much, they could end up being someone you don't even know."

Toriel sighed quietly and closed the book, looking at Frisk worriedly.

Frisk, on the other hand, was staring at the ground, seeming to be deep in thought. "So..is that the reason why he's chasing after me? He wants to take my determination away?"

"I'm afraid that's what it seems like. I once believed that story to be a fairy tale, back when I was younger. Now that I know that it's true, I don't know what to make of it..all I can really say is that I will do everything in my power to protect you, Frisk. He won't be able to lay a hand on you without us putting up a fight." Toriel said.

"YES, THAT'S RIGHT! HE WON'T BE ABLE TO TOUCH YOU WITH US PROTECTING YOU!" Papyrus added, beaming.

"let me tell ya, if i ever get a glimpse of this form snatching weirdo, i'll probably be the last thing he sees." Sans chuckled quietly.

After Sans's statement, Frisk felt a little intimidated, but nonetheless grateful knowing that his family is willing to protect him.

Alphys, who had been working while Toriel read, gave a small gasp. She stepped away from her lab desk and approached the group once more. "Okay, s-so it turns out that my i-ice wolf theory is correct. B-but! I've figured out some new key details that I missed before!"

"spill it, doc." said Sans.

"The DNA that is now a-attaching itself to Frisk's human DNA isn't 100% ice wolf, in fact, it looks like it's been either mutated o-or genetically modified in some way. Ice wolves have never been able to change another person into an ice wolf in any way, s-so Nouvel had to have somehow added that feature to it. I-it also seems like he combined it with normal timber wolf DNA, s-seeing as how Frisk doesn't look like an ice wolf. It's some weird hybrid of both human biology and monster magic."
