Preeti stared at Mira who was looking through her phone with a gloomy expression. Then she said while tying her hair up,
"Dont tell me he turned out to be a jerk!"
Mira remained silent. Preeti asked with concern,
"Miru...what happened? Did the guy misbehave?"
"No yaar...I just didnt feel like I could stay any longer, so I ended it earlier...that's all"
Mira said as she thought about how awkwardly she had excused herself for leaving early to Akhilan. Anyone at the cafe could have made out that Mira was trying to escape the place in a rush.
It was when Mira refused dinner that Preeti became furious and finally grabbed her phone from her hand. Preeti saw a photo of Mira and Vikranth on Mira's phone screen and gave her a stare demanding an explanation for her strange behaviour.
"I couldnt do it Preeti! The whole time I was with this guy, I felt like it was fake, like I was being fake and not true to myself...all coz of that jerk!"
"Who? Akhilan?" Preeti asked.
"Vikranth!" Mira blurted out quickly.
"Vikranth? But why?"
"I dont freakin know! I lost the stupid dare! Okay?! Its been months since I last saw him but my stupid brain cannot seem to move on with life and I end up thinking about him every single day! To make it worse, the jerk hasnt texted me in weeks! Its like he's living his usual life while I'm a stuck up loser who just cannot stop thinking about him!"
Mira took a breath before she said, "And today, I felt like I was betraying him! I mean why did I feel guilty when there's nothing to feel guilty about?! I just-just dont know Preeti...whats going on in my head!"
Mira was frustrated. Preeti sighed and sat down beside Mira as she gave her a glass of water. She pushed back the hair from Mira's face, held her hand and asked quietly,
"Miru...dont get mad okay? But did something happen in Boston... I mean between you and Vikranth?"
Mira heaved a sigh and told Preeti about her inability to stay away from Vikranth despite being aware of her feelings for him. She narrated in detail the events of the night before she left Boston, about Vikranth's clocktower surprise, her gift for him and the special moment they shared together that night. Preeti widened her eyes in shock.
"Oh. My. God. All this happened and you're telling me now? You guys went on an actual date and you didnt find it important to share any of it with me?!"
"You were busy with the wedding...didnt want to bother you with this" Mira replied as Preeti sighed and shook her head.
Mira went on to tell Preeti about how difficult it was for her to say goodbye to him at the airport.
"Preeti, you know that I don't get attached to places, since I've been moving places all my life...but that day when I left Boston, I felt like I was leaving a part of me behind...I couldn't face his eyes and say goodbye, I felt so miserable..."
At this point, Mira had started crying. Preeti listened intently as Mira confessed and rubbed her shoulder to console her.
" I thought I would be fine eventually when I get back to routine here...but with him ghosting me, it's only gotten worse..."
Mira wiped her eyes when she was done. Finally Preeti said something which left Mira speechless. Preeti lifted Mira's face by the chin and said,
"Miru...I think you might be-no wait, you are in love with that jerk-Vikranth."
