Keefe's POV

"What more do you want from me??" Keefe asked, struggling in the chair his arms were tied to. "And is this really necessary?"

Lady Gisela walked towards her son and stopped right in front of him. "I want you to obey me. And while you're at it, stop thinking about that pathetic girlfriend of yours. You do realize you've been gone for 5 months, right? Any feelings that she would've had are gone. Dead."

Keefe gritted his teeth together and told himself that wasn't true. But deep down, he believed his mom.

"And this is necessary. It's time to start training you to forget your pathetic girlf-"

"Her name is Sophie. The least you could do is say her name."

Lady Gisela rolled her eyes and said, "If you want to make this harder, fine. It's time to start training you to forget Sophie."

"Let me guess, you're going to erase her from my memory?"

"Of course not. What we are going to do is have a telepath track your thoughts. Every time you think about Sophie, Alvar can do whatever he wants to punish you."

Alvar appeared next to Keefe with a medler and shot him with it.

"He's been thinking about her this whole time," Alvar reported as Keefe recovered from the electric burst.

"Do your worst," Lady Gisela said as she strode out of the room. Alvar gave a small nod and turned towards Keefe.

"I need you to stop thinking about Sophie for 5 minutes, or I'll be forced to hurt you," Alvar said in a low voice. "Ignore everything I'm about to say,"

Keefe gave a small nod as Alvar started tempting him into thinking about Sophie.

"Sophie Foster. You love her, don't you? I'm no empath, but I can tell. All you want is to see her and tell her you are okay. That you are sorry. That you love her,"

Keefe let the words enter his mind, but put no thought towards them. He, instead, thought about how the ropes cut into his skin. He thought about how the electricity he was shot with was still racing through him. He concentrated on that type of pain, and before he knew it, Alvar was untying the ropes.

"Wha-" Keefe started, but he was cut off by a sharp "Shh!"

He stayed silent as they walked out the door, which led into a dark hallway. Alvar led Keefe to his room and closed the door behind them.

Keefe looked at the now locked door, raised an eyebrow, and with a smirk, said, "I have a girlfriend, you know."

"Are you sure? I mean, you've been gone for a while," Alvar said.

Keefe ignored his question and asked, "Why are we here? Also, what happened to your leg?"

"To get to this door," Alvar said, pointing to the wall. Keefe was about to say there wasn't anything there when Alvar tapped the wall, and a door appeared. He opened it and walked through. He waved for Keefe to follow.

"And my leg; I didn't finish a mission to your mom's expectations, so she broke some bones," Alvar said as they walked through the door, which led outside.

"Take my hand," Alvar said. Keefe gave him a suspicious look but took his hand. They ran out together, though, with Alvar's hurt leg, it looked more like skipping. They walked out to an open field.

Alvar took out his pathfinder and said, "Where do you want to go? I'll most likely have to leap away before anyone sees me,"

"Havenfield. I need to see Sophie," Keefe said without hesitation.
