it's been some time and sam is now 8 weeks pregnant. which means it's finally time to return to his obstetrician and get his second-ever ultrasound.

colby helped sam make them something to eat before heading out to see sam's doctor, angie, again. sam was feeling very uneasy about today, but mainly because he couldn't bare to wait another second. he wondered what the baby was going to look like on the screen, and how big it was going to be, and he wondered if he was going to get emotional after being able to see it for the first time.

which was very likely to happen.

sam looked over at a shaking, lip-quivering, colby. he was focusing so hard on driving so that they would make it there safely. he was going to be such a good dad.

"you look more nervous than me," sam said. "calm down."

"I'm not nervous, sam."

"it's okay, I'm nervous too." sam said, looking down at his lap, his hand cupping at his stomach. colby looked over at him and sighed, placing a hand on sam's thigh, giving it a small squeeze.

"I'm here for you, no matter what you need, no matter what happens, i'm here for you." colby said compassionately, making sam's heart skip a beat.

"thanks, colby. it means a lot..." sam trailed off. "I really thought you were going to leave me that day we found out..."

"what!?" colby said loudly, making sam flinch.

"sorry," colby said with guilty eyes. "it's just... I will never leave you, sam. ever."

all sam could do was smile. his chest filled with flares of love that made his heart feel like it was bouncing out of his chest. sam was sure about how he felt about colby, mostly because he had never felt this way about anyone. he wanted to tell him, but he couldn't find the right moment. it had to be perfect.

"we're here, babe." colby said, unfastening his seatbelt, then sprinting to the other side to let sam out.

"thanks," he blushed at the pet name.

"I know our situation isn't the best, but, is it wrong to be kind of... i don't know, excited..?" sam asked with a shy, hopeful smile.

colby stopped them in their tracks to look at him in his eyes. sam really was the most adorable person he'd ever met. he reached for sam's hands and pulled him close.

"never be ashamed of your gift. I'm just as excited as you are," he said to sam with a soft smile, pulling him into a warm, comforting hug. he couldn't help the tear that slid down his cheek. the way he cared for colby was more than words could describe.

sam wiped his eyes before colby could see he had started crying, and they proceeded to make their way into the hospital.

after they reached their room, they were greeted with a familiar face.

"hello there boys, how are you two doing this morning?" angie asked with a kind smile as she organized and arranged all of her things for the appointment.

"good," they both said at the same time. "yourself?"

"I'm well, so has anything happened over the past few weeks?" she said to them, getting settled in her small bar stool.

"nothing really, everything's been fine." sam said calmly.

"that's great! let's get you ready for the ultrasound then." angie suggested as she pulled out the equipment.

she squeezed out the gel and placed the wand on sam's abdomen, the three of their eyes locked on the screen.

"okay so," she trailed off, searching for the best angle. "there is your baby." she pointed to the small grey blob. it was very obvious that he was pregnant now, and he couldn't believe he wasn't showing by how big the baby looked on screen. she read sam's mind though.

"the picture is a little more blown up than it really is, so your baby is actually about the size of a small raspberry. the hands and feet are still webbed, but soon the extra tissue between its digits will be reabsorbed to reveal its individual fingers and toes."

colby reached for sam's hand, his eyes tearing up at the sight of their raspberry-sized baby. the feeling of becoming a dad was starting to become very apparent to colby now. he looked at sam with soft, watery eyes.

"that's our baby, sam." he said. small, hot tears started to slip down his face.

"yeah, it is." sam wiped his eyes to remove the watery glare, his voice cracking.

the two looked from the screen to each other in the eyes while small, crooked grins turned into full-teethed ear to ear smiles.

to say that they were in love was one thing, but it was very obvious that they equally loved this baby just as much— if not more— and they would protect it with their whole hearts.

no matter what.
