Joker
"Did you really think I wouldn't find out?" Dr. Mavis chuckled as he slapped a manilla folder on the white table.
I was tied to a chair in an office, everything was dark or at least I thought it was. They took turns beating me, I didn't care though I was used to it.
With every hit, I thought of her, that beautiful smile and the way she laughed at all of my jokes.
"You sir are legendary. You got the infamous Harleen Quinzel to not only open her heart but her legs as well." the doctor clapped, his laughter echoed through the room.
"That's not true, leave her out of this." I said weakly, I tried to see through the dark get a good look at the man.
Harleen didn't deserve such harsh words, this was the doctor she told me about. The creep who made the comments about her skirt. I could take it, I had this urge to kill anyone who meant to do her any sort of harm.
This twisted doctor was no exception.
He was just like those jerks in the subway, the type that were so high at the top that they couldn't even level with the little guy. He expected us to all bow down and cower, but not anymore I was done being the guy that they stepped on.
The doctor pushed one of the pictures in my face, it was of Harleen letting me out of my handcuffs.
"She's finished." he winced as he sat across from me in his own chair.
From what I could see he was all bruised and bloody, he even had a cast on his arm. His face still had some dried blood, he looked like he was on the losing end of the worst fight of his life.
Whoever did this to him meant business and I was sure that they meant to kill him.
"Tell me, how did you do it?" the more he spoke the more I noticed that he slurred on his words. Some of his teeth were missing, it was just too dark for me to tell which ones.
I shook my head "I don't know what you're talking about."
A hard blow was delivered to my stomach, I could taste the cool metallic taste of blood as it came up my throat.
"How the fuck did a psycho loser like you manage to fuck Harleen Quinzel?" he screamed in my face as he showed me yet another picture.
It was of Harleen sitting on the table as she listened to me go over my new comedy routine. Harleen looked at me with such adoration, she leaned forward as I neared the punchline. The sound of her laughter was all that I wanted. There was nothing wrong with the picture but it made him angry. He shuffled through more pictures until he settled on one more.
"I've tried for years and here comes psycho," he held the final picture up to my face "to steal what's mine."
It was Harleen and I kissing, just looking at the picture made my heart jump. I wanted to hold her close at that moment. Instead, there was a table that kept us apart, even so, I still felt so close to her. Her lips were so soft, her touch so gentle. In my darkest moments, I thought of her and it provided a light I didn't know I could ever see.
"She doesn't belong to you." I said through gritted teeth. I felt the sting of a punch across my jaw shortly after my "outburst".
The doctor shook his head "I'm going to ruin her, and when I'm finished with her I'll see you in the chair."
I felt a laugh crawl up my throat and enter the empty stagnant air of the room. I couldn't stop no matter how much it hurt, I couldn't fathom anything bad happening to Harleen. It was already bad enough that I was helpless inside of Arkham. Even outside of Arkham what was I to do? How could I protect her?
The doctor grimaced as he watched me fall apart "Teach the clown a lesson." he scoffed.
"She's all I have." I said in between laughs and punched my face and stomach.
I don't know how long I sat in that chair and got beat. All I could think about was her and I wouldn't have it any other way.
