"So why was he trying to kill you if he's the leader of your glade?" Taylor asks.
"That much I don't know" I reply with a sigh. "I mean. I know I'm the daughter of the person that created this place but he started way before he even knew about that. Plus. If my mother cared that much about me. She wouldn't have sent me here" for the last hour I had been explaining the situation to the girls. So far the grievers hadn't found us.
Taylor is silent again. Thinking.
"I suppose. If there is a chance this place exists then we may as well try. I mean. It's not as if things here are safe" she finally says. Which is followed by a groan from alby. He was currently restrained to the grate. I move to where he is sitting and stand over top of him. He finally opens his eyes and I glare down at him.
"Why'd you try killing me" I growl getting straight to the point.
"Not one for beating around the bush are you" alby snaps.
"Alby" I warn impatiently.
"You're supposed to be smart" he says with a bloody smirk "why don't you figure it out"
I keep silent. I hated backing down from a challenge. And it wasn't as if he was going to tell me.
I go over all the things I know about him. Then. Like before. It clicks.
"You weren't supposed to be the first in the glade" I state.
"Figuring it out then" he mutters his eyes growing dark. "You were meant to be the first one. When you went missing. Well. They decided they would send their favourite in first. Unlike the rest of you shanks. I never lost my memory. My task. From the beginning'. Was to kill you"
I'm scared to ask the next question. Terrified even. "Who gave you that task" I ask
His grin widens "come on mia. You're smarter than that" he smirks.
I keep silent again before muttering "my mother"
His smirk disappears as he jumps to his feet. The rope tying him to the grate has been untied. Shoving the grate open he jumps out of the box. I climb out quickly after him. Only to see a griever catch him meters away. I have to turn away as I hear his blood-curdling scream. Then it goes silent.
I pull the grate quickly back over and sink to the ground. I stare at a random space in the box. As I try not to cry. Even if he was trying to kill me. It was horrible to see him die like that.
I must have fallen asleep because Taylor wakes me early the next morning.
"It's time to go" she says gently.
I nod stiffly. Using the wall to pull myself to my feet. I had been running on adrenaline yesterday. I hadn't noticed how sore my leg actually was until I took a step on it and nearly fell. I straighten myself back up following behind Taylor unable to hide my limp.
