Frank said I had to go to the appointment with a guidance counselor. He did not say I had to cooperate.
I crossed my arms and my legs and stared angrily at the wall.
My guidance counselor, Mrs. K, sat at her desk across from me. "So, Gerard. Mr. Iero tells me you've been having some problems at home."
"Mhm."
"Would you like to elaborate on that?"
"Nope." I looked out the window.
Mrs. K sighed. "Okay. So, let me try to get to know you better. You were in the GSA as a freshman, correct?"
"Yep."
"So you're...gay?"
"No."
"An ally?"
"No."
"What's the other one...transgender?"
"No." I sighed. "I'm pansexual. I'll fuck any consenting human who's alive and my age."
"Watch your mouth, young man. Who are you friends with?"
"Mr. Iero and Bert McCracken."
She folded her hands on her desk. "Bert McCracken is not a very good influence."
"Yeah?" I shook my leg impatiently, glancing at the clock behind her. "Well, it's either him or nothing, take your pick."
She sighed shortly. "Please cooperate with me. Mr. McCracken has been caught smoking behind the school multiple times. I don't want to have to remind you that this is a smoke free campus."
"Great." I smiled. "So don't."
"Let's talk about home. Who do you live with?"
"My mom and my brother"
"Okay. Your brother is..." She clicked away at her computer. "Michael Way?"
"Yes."
She frowned. "He seems to have a record of detentions."
"Yeah."
"Is his school work affected by what's going on at home too?"
"No."
"Please explain this to me."
I sighed. "Mikey's friends are a bunch of assholes who think it's okay to be dicks to me. They're influencing his work ethic. That's what's going on at home. Happy?"
She frowned. "Is that something we could all work on together?"
I scoffed. "Have you ever met a high school student? The one thing they hate more than admitting their faults is teamwork."
She buried her face in her hands before looking back up at me and smiling. "Alright, Gerard. Why don't you go back to class?"
I smiled and picked up my backpack. "Thanks, Mrs. K."
xXx
As soon as guitar class ended, Frank beckoned me over to his desk.
I stood across from him and crossed my arms.
"Why are you like this?" he asked.
I kept a straight face. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Mrs. K talked to me. You have to cooperate, Gerard. It's the only way anything is going to get better." He sighed. "Sit. We might end up talking for a while."
