Chapter 26

~Cleo’s P.O.V.~

While hunting I ate three deer and a black bear, which was a lot for me. All that was left were the bones. I only had to fight the bear for five minutes until I bit his head off. I was sitting in a tree in my human form waiting for the gang to pass in my truck. I heard the truck turn the corner and waited for the right moment to jump. When it came I hopped off the branch and fell through the air. I landed on the roof with a thud and looked on the sides. The back right window was open so I swung my head down outside the window. “Hey y’all what did I miss?” I asked through the window still on the roof. “Cleo for god’s sake get in the truck before you fall off the roof.” Darry demanded and I sighed. “Aww… c’mon where’s the fun in that?” I pouted looking at him. I noticed for the first time that Soda was driving. “Okay now I am scared. If Soda is driving I should get off the roof.” I said and looked at the people in the backseat. It went Dally, Johnny, Summer, then Pony. “Dallas Winston, I swear if you drop me I will kill you.” I said reaching my arms inside. “Don’t worry baby sis. Pony would kill me if I let you fall.” He said pulling me in upside down. “You got that right. Now pass her to me.” Pony said reaching out to help me over to him. I sat on his lap and he wrapped his arms around my waist. I laid my head on his shoulder and nuzzled into his neck. I yawned and curled up on Pony’s lap. He kissed my head and I drifted off to sleep. Being a wolf is tiring.

I awoke an hour later to the feeling of being lifted out of the truck. I opened my eyes to see the face of Ponyboy. I smiled and wrapped my arms around his neck. He smiled back at me as he walked through the door. He sat on the couch with me still on his lap. I rested my head on his chest and listened to his heart. Summer smiled at the sight of us as she sat next to Johnny. “Cleo?” Soda asked. “Hmm...” I answered, not moving my head. “Can you transform into any other animals?” Soda asked and I shook my head. “Dang it.” He whined and I smiled. Pony rubbed soothing circles on my hip with his thumb. This moment couldn’t get any more perfect. We stayed like that while Darry made dinner and the others watched TV. I suddenly remembered something Summer said earlier. I lifted my head off Pony’s shoulder. “When I was talking to you guys earlier, you all could hear me.” I said and everyone nodded and I heard a ‘yea’ from Darry. I smiled and looked at Summer who was looking at me smiling. “That means you guys are going to be a part of my life.” I said and everyone looked happy to hear that. “That means we aren’t going back.” Summer said. She sounded happy and I was too. I didn’t want to go back. I liked the 60’s and wanted to live here. “What about your house? How will you pay the bills?” Darry asked. I thought for a minute. I wasn’t old enough to get a job and I was the only one in the house. I did have some money saved up and my parents owned a safe that I can easily break into, but that wouldn’t last long. I shrugged, “I don’t know I’ll be fine for now.” “Okay but if you need anything don’t be afraid to ask.” He said and I shook my head. “I can’t take money from you guys, you already have enough to worry about Darry you don’t need another.” I said and he smiled. “You’re family Cleo and that’s what families do they help each other out.” He said and I felt my heart warm up a bit. I never felt like part of a family even in my own. Now I was surrounded by my brother, best friend, boyfriend, and the rest of this screwed up family.
