~~~(Wouldn't It Be Nice by Jon Foreman)~~~
Case Mercy wheels himself into Seaview High School for the first day of his junior year. His dirty blonde hair is lighter from spending his summer wheeling himself all over Beverly Hills with his wheelchair. He's wearing a polo shirt and khakis, trying his best to smile at his classmates as they pass him in the hallway. The green and blue lockers bring him back to his first two years of attending this school.
"Hi Case." Tatiana Kapur waves to him from her locker and Case waves back. He continues down the middle of the hall, seeing Anna Adams walking with her friend Brooklyn Sabin, both of them giving friendly waves.
"Hi." Case waves to them, turning the corner and noticing Kai Evans with his twin sister Harrow, both of them laughing as they make their ways into the school together. Tabby Miles wears a chipper smile on her face as she descends the main stairs by the front office, Emlyn Crawford nearly colliding with her as he tries getting to Kai.
Case adjusts the gloves on his hands as he lets his chair roll a few feet ahead without having to push. Cambridge Brightwell chatters on his cell phone, looking stressed as he closes the door to his locker and heads for the restroom. Case gives himself another shove, feeling the stares from the people around him. They've all been talking about his drunken car accident that happened about three months ago. The accident was his fault for drinking and driving and since then, he hasn't touched alcohol. He's done with going out and partying with his older friends and he's done driving, clearly. A metal plate from either his car or the bus actually stabbed him in the gut, hitting his nerve and basically paralyzing him. The doctors urged him to do physical therapy even though they said it's unlikely for him to be able to walk again.
"It's about time." Israel Sepulveda greets Case at the window ledge, his twin brother Rhyannon standing next to him with his boyfriend Kent Mast.
"We've been waiting for you." Rhyannon looks down at Case.
"Skylar is a slow driver, remember?" Case tries to smile but he knows it looks forced. His brother has been driving Case everywhere he needs to be, not trusting anyone else behind the wheel- including their own parents.
"We should walk through our schedules because I have no clue what's even on it." Israel takes his schedule out of his bag and the others nod in agreement.
"Yeah." Case's face falls, a little upset that he's going to have to push his chair the whole time to keep up. But he has been training for this the entire summer. "Let's go."
~~~(END SONG)~~~Kai Evans walks with Harrow down the hallway at Seaview High School, already hating today. He wouldn't mind it too much if his ex-boyfriend Aaron Gilmore wasn't returning to be his teacher again but there's really not much to be done about it. He doesn't know why Aaron is coming back and he doesn't know how and what he did to get out of jail but just three months ago, Kai discovered that the teacher he used to hook up with, is returning to Seaview High School. Kai managed to dodge Aaron all summer, keeping his boyfriend Emlyn Crawford close by his side. He doesn't want to start anything back up with Aaron. Kai is happy being with Emlyn, he doesn't need anyone starting waves.
"Are you sure you're going to be okay writing for the school newspaper?" Harrow's long brown hair cascades down her back and she's wearing a black romper with wedges. Now that the two of them are juniors, Kai is sure that his sister will be at the tippy top of the social ladder. She has been climbing it for two years now and she's sure to beat any senior girl who tries getting in her way.
"Harrow, for the last time, I'm fine." Kai repeats himself. She has been asking him this all morning. It's no secret what happened between Kai and Aaron- which is why Kai is so confused on why the school board would even let him back into the school. Are they crazy or just plain whack? "It'll be weird at first but Aaron and I haven't spoken since that day he came to the house. It's not like we're going to start anything back up."
"You never know." Harrow shrugs her shoulders. "Old feelings come back just as quickly as they did the first time."
"Are you still talking about me and Aaron or you and Israel?" Kai pretends to yawn. Israel Sepulveda and Harrow have had a weird relationship since freshmen year. They had a secret relationship even though their dads were running against each other in the mayor campaign and it ultimately ended when Harrow exposed Mr. Sepulveda for trying to rig the votes- but he's dead now.
"You and Aaron." Harrow shoots him a look. "Israel and I are just friends. That's it."
"For now." Kai nudges her. "You never know, old feelings can come just as back as they did the first time."
"Shut up." Harrow rolls her eyes with a grin but both of them stop walking when Emerson Crawford rounds the corner. Kai looks away from him in annoyance. Emerson is the loon who burned down the 8 Count Dance Studio for Harrow because she got rejected from joining the team. There was all this drama with Emerson going to the police and blaming it all on Israel- who actually watched Emerson burn down the building himself. Now, Harrow and Kai and just about more than half the school are against Emerson. He's psycho.
"The Evans Twins." Emerson smiles at the two of them. His looks throw people off entirely. He has that golden boy rep that makes him even cuter but Kai keeps reminding himself how crazy he is. Emerson and Emlyn have the same sharp jawline, the same swoopy hair, the straight eyebrows. They look like they could be models. "It's always a nice surprise."
"Looks like it's only one sided." Harrow tries moving around him but Emerson blocks her path. "Get out of my way."
"Don't you want to hear me out a little bit?" Emerson pleas and Harrow folds her arms across her chest. "I may be seen as the villain as of right now but I promise you, I don't mean too much harm."
"What are you planning?" Kai looks bored.
"Aaron Gilmore has returned to Seaview High School." Emerson says dramatically. "All because of me."
"You do know I'm dating your brother, right?" Kai blinks twice. What's Emerson's motive behind bringing Aaron back? What's the point?
"I'm fully aware, yes." Emerson confirms. "You guys might have forgotten that my dad is head of the school board and that I kind of hate both of you." He laughs but the twins don't budge. "With that being said, Kai doesn't deserve to be with my brother. So, I did the only reasonable thing to do and that's to bring back Kai's great love."
"You're an ass." Kai rams his shoulder into Emerson's as he and his sister move around him. Kai can't believe just how villainous Emerson actually is. It's almost scary. But it's not something that'll push him away from Emlyn.
