Case wheels his chair into the kitchen on Monday morning after having his mom help him get ready for the day. He hasn't told them about agreeing to do the stem cell surgery yet but Dr. Chai still has to meet with them to discuss the risks, money, and everything of that sort. Case has been pushing back the meeting every time Dr. Chai calls, just because Case hasn't prepared himself for the level of grounding that his parents are going to pull on him if they found out that he agreed to do it without their permission.
"So?" Skylar asks from the island when his brother wheels in. "Any luck?"
Case shakes his head. Skylar has been pushing for Case to talk to their parents about getting the surgery because he hates Case being in this chair just as much as Case himself does. He had a long talk with his brother at the hospital about wanting to see him walk again and that he's on his side to get this done. At least Case has ONE person. "I don't even know how to bring it up."
"Don't ask them, TELL them." Skylar advises, shoving a spoonful of milk and cereal into his mouth. "They won't have any other option than to agree."
"That's not how it works." Case shakes his head. "They're not that easy to get approval."
"Yeah they are." Skylar snorts. "And if they say no, just remind them that they didn't come chasing us after we left our old place. And say that we were on our own for ages and it's their fault."
Case has often thought about pulling some of those cards to get his parents to feel bad for him but he isn't positive they'll work. His parents are more like a mom and dad than Case has ever seen them be. This means that there's a huge chance they'll say no to giving Case the money for the procedure. "But who knows if that'll actually work?"
"You'll never know unless you try." Skylar tells him.
Case starts wheeling himself over to the silver fridge in the corner, the wheel of his chair getting caught on his dad's jacket draped over one of the kitchen chairs. He jerks his wheel away from it, the jacket falling to the floor and money sticking out from the inside pocket. Case's eyes widen when he notices they're one hundred dollar bills. Curious, he picks up the coat to search for more contents. He digs inside, pulling out thick wads of different dollar bills wrapped in rubber bands. "Holy shit."
"What is that?" Skylar asks from the island.
"This is dad's coat." Case glances at his brother, the money laying in his lap. "The surgery is expensive they say... yeah, my ass.""Okay, I know I'm late but I have a good explanation." Kai says loudly when he goes through the front door into his loft. He's carrying a bag full of decorations to put out throughout the loft and even though Aaron told him not to spend too much money, he couldn't help himself. Kai isn't the type of person to just live in some bland home that has nothing to spice it up with. He doesn't even feel bad for getting all this stuff. If he and Aaron are going to be living here for the rest of their lives, then they'll need stuff to look at. "I got a little carried away..." He trails off as he walks into the kitchen, staring at the sight. His parents are seated at the yellow table Aaron brought home from the side of the road while Aaron leans against the counter, his eyes on the floor. "I didn't know we were having company."
"Surprise." Mrs. Evans says dryly. She has the same nose as Kai, as well as the same colored hair. Hers stops at her chin and she's wearing a blazer and jeans. Her face doesn't look too happy and her greeting is obviously sarcastic.
"I don't get any balloons?" Kai tries joking as he sets the bag down on the counter where Aaron isn't saying a word. Kai takes the scarf off around his neck. He also needed to go out and buy a fall wardrobe to fit in with the climate here. He's been having Harrow send over money from their parents since he's having more than a hard time finding a job.
"You think this is funny?" Mr. Evans demands, his voice just how Kai remembers it. His pepper gray hair is combed to the side and he's wearing the tie that Harrow picked out for him for Christmas last year. "Because it's not."
"Your parents are here because they want you to go home." Aaron looks at Kai. Apparently they already had a conversation before Kai got here.
"As he should." Mr. Evans gets to his feet and looks at Aaron. "You're an adult. You shouldn't have traveled across the country with our son."
"He's only seventeen." Mrs. Evans adds. "Whatever is going on between you two is illegal."
"I feel very strongly about your son, ma'am." Aaron looks her right in the eye. "And I know that leaving Beverly Hills wasn't the smartest choice for us to make and I apologize for that-"
"You need to be doing more than apologize." Mr. Evans interjects. He looks around the loft with his upper lip raised. "You guys are living in a bad part of Brooklyn, living off TV dinners, and only one of you has a job."
"What made you guys think this was okay?" Mrs. Evans looks from Aaron to her son. "Why do this?"
Kai opens his mouth to speak but he takes a minute to gather his thoughts. The only way they knew where he was is because Harrow probably told them. He doesn't even feel himself getting mad at his sister for ratting him out. "Emlyn found out about us and we were afraid of Aaron getting fired. So we left."
"How dumb are you?" Mr. Evans yells at his son. "I thought we raised you better than this!"
"You did." Kai assures, raising his voice. "Just because I ran away doesn't make me a bad person."
"It doesn't make you a smart one." Mr. Evans shoots back.
"Come on. You're leaving." Mrs. Evans grabs her son by the wrist but Kai yanks it away. "Malachai Evans."
"I'm not leaving." Kai's voice cracks. He's never stood up to his parents like this before but a part of him feels bad for it. They were there for him after his rape, they stuck by him when they battled DeVitis and Brown. They were always there for him and he just fled.
"Yes, you are." Mr. Evans assures. "And we're not leaving New York until you do."
