The soft drops of water fall down on the pavement, making my jeans soaking wet. An irritated sigh leaves my lips. I hate the rain. People are rushing to their homes with umbrellas in their hands and raincoats draped over their bodies. I would have taken an umbrella, but I always lose or break the damn thing. Mostly because the wind blows it the wrong side and then I end up flailing all over the place, trying to get it right again. It's like trying to sail while there's a giant rip in the canvas.
I cross the dark road after hastily watching both sides for speeding cars. Through dripping eyelashes, I look around me, hoping to spot Kai already. The brown-haired boy looks up from his phone and grins. "Hey, loser," he greets me, giving the funny handshake that we always do. "Hey, how are you?" I ask. We walk down the wet road towards his house, the street lights giving the glinstering puddles a nice, warm glow. He shrugs his covered shoulders, his coat making a squeaky sound as his arms rub against his side.
"The same as always. Although, my mom being on vacation is a nice change," he says while chuckling. I roll my eyes. He always acts like his mother is the worst, while I think she is the sweetest mother anyone can have. She always makes me feel at home if I need to escape from mine again. Countless of times, I have stood there crying, screaming, knocking on their door. At first I was afraid that she would call my parents, but after the second time she made it clear that she would never do that. If a woman cries, you never tell, she told me.
"Kai, you literally have the sweetest mom," I scold him playfully. I know he really loves his mom, he just like to joke around about it. Or maybe he's just too macho to let anyone know. "I know, I know," he says while opening the front door. We walk inside and are greeted by the many colors this house has. It's kind of chaotic, but good chaotic. I take of my shoes and place them on the brightly orange carpet.
"You got the drinks, right?" I ask Kai. He turns around and nods his head. Kai is pretty handsome. His freshly shaved, sharp jawline is only adding up to it. The boy knows how to dress too, with his white polo shirt and his black dress pants. He's more stylish than I am, probably. "You go change, I will pour us a glass in the mean time."
I look at my jeans, drenched in the storm outside. I can probably wring them out and fill a bucket with every drop of water that's soaked into the detailed textile. "Good plan," I giggle. I drag my feet up the stairs, walking into the cosy guest room. In comparison to the rest of the house, this one is very calm. With only a single-bed, a closet and a nightstand, this is probably the room with the least furniture.
I open the mirror door of the closet and take out my second pair of jeans, along with a white shirt and hoodie. Most of the time someone's in this room, it's me when I sleep over. Marsha, Kai's mother, said that I could store some of my stuff here too. Which comes in very handy in situations like this. A chuckle leaves my lips at the thought of Marsha.
