"the number you're calling is inactive, please try again in a few moments." the monotonous voice spoke from her phone speaker. mirae sighed, no matter how many times or many 'few moments', for the past ten minutes she couldn't reach her parents.
she stood in front of her house, clutching the postcard in her hands. something about the painting tapped on her mind in familiarity, but she just can't get a hold of it, that important tiny detail. she eyed the horizon, the sky is still bright as the sun prepared its descent.
suddenly her phone rang, her eyes immediately scanned the screen hoping of her parent's call, instead, an unknown number popped on the glossy surface.
she furrowed her brows, this is already the second call from an unknown number within two days. as she noticed the digits were different, she thought she might as well go with it. instead of answering, the girl edged her phone speaker closer to the fence and tapped a rhythm on the fence.
to her disappoint, the other line was filled with static. but not for long muffled sounds came out, as if they're arguing while covering the speaker. most of the sounds were unclear but she detected two voices, one low and harsh, the other softer but just as angry. to her confusion, mirae caught 'bunny-looking ass.' somewhere along the snippets.
"uh, hello?"
the caller was in complete silence, not even static, the last thing she heard was a panicked "fuck." and "bitch cut it off!" before they abruptly ended the call.
she stared at her mobile, "that's some way to waste my phone bills..." she murmured. mirae turned her phone off and slipped it into her pocket after blocking unknown numbers from reaching her, sanity and patience could only hold on to her for so long.
