Eight months on my own was all I needed to make my name in the city as one of the best lawyers and with the amount of work that I put in, I would be surprised if I wasn’t. I was the youngest lawyer in the firm, all my juniors were actually senior to me in age and experience but I had surpassed them professionally. Right now, the only person I was planning to be better at in the game was Derek Lancaster. Yes, he was my ex-boss and mentor but now he had become my biggest competition.
“Ma’am, Nelson is here to see you” Stella said, I had made her my assistant and hired somebody else to be the receptionist.
“Nelson who?” I said still focused at my laptop.
“Nelson Williams from The Lancaster Law Practice” Stella said.
I got flashbacks of the terrible times I had when I worked with Nelson in my previous. He was the one person who always got on my nerves.
“Send him in”  I rolled my eyes.
“What does he want?” I whispered.
“I’m just here to make a deal” He replied.
How did he even hear what I said?
He entered and sat in the chair in front of my desk.
He handed me an envelope, I opened it. It was an invitation to a party.
“I don’t do parties” I replied.
“I know, that’s why I’m here to make a deal” He smirked.
“I am not interested” I said as folded my laptop, I didn’t want him to see what I was working on. He could sabotage my works in the blink of an eye.
“You will be once I start talking about this man called Bryant” He said.
I gulped. How did he even know who Bryant was?
“I don’t know him” I snapped.
“Well, he sure does know you. In fact he keeps coming to the office to look for you and keeps demanding your whereabouts” He stared daggers at me.
“Don’t you dare Nelson!” I warned him.
“You said that you didn’t know who he is so why do you care so much?” He pretended to be interested.
“He could be a client. He might bring in good reputation to your firm so why are you avoiding him?” He asked.
“How is that related to this party?” I said.
“I mean I won’t tell him that you work here the next time he comes to interrogate us if you are willing to accompany me to this party” He paused.
“Of all people why do you need me to accompany you?” I asked.
“You really think that I need you?” He grumbled.
“You’re not even pretty enough to hang out with me” He added.
“You’re right. I’m not pretty enough to be seen with you. So you should go ahead and ask a beautiful model to be your date not me” I said.
“Just shut up and do what I have asked you to do if you want your new address to remain a secret” He looked a little nervous as he said that.
“What makes you think that I will do as you say? I am not afraid of either one of you” I batted my lashes. He smirked and said,
“If you are not scared then why are you sweating?”
“I-I am not feeling well.” I lied.
Nelson was the most cunning man I had ever seen in my life and he knew how to push all of my buttons.
“I hope you feel better before you get to go on a date with me” He said sarcastically and he left the office. Just when he left I banged the table so hard, I hated that man with all my gut. My eyes fell on the invitation card that he gave me, it was actually a wedding invitation. I did not want to attend it but I had to, Nelson will do anything to put me in trouble and Bryant was the worst of it all.
