Chapter Eight

“So when are we going shopping?” Michelle asked.
“Wow I don’t have anything to wear to the party” I said upon the sudden realization.
“That’s why, when are we going to go shopping?” She asked again.
“The party is at 7pm right? So we can go shopping tomorrow” I said as I texted my sister Elle to ask her for fashion advice. I have never been fashionable and up-to-date with trends like my sister and it has been a while since I last attended parties.
“What if all the good dresses are sold out?” Michelle stated.
“There are about hundreds of boutiques in the city” I rolled my eyes.
“But I want to go now” She whined.
“Mich, I am so tired. I just want to shower, eat something and curl up in my bed” I groaned as I entered the code to the apartment.
“Fine” Michelle uttered. Sometimes she acted like she was a child and I had to mother my way out.
I took a shower, ate some mac and cheese and went straight to bed. I was already dreading the shopping trip I had with Michelle the next day.
     It had been seven hours already and we were still shopping, I bought a short black dress with a deep V neck and Michelle was still looking for the perfect pair of shoes for a red spaghetti strap dress that she had bought. I was exhausted and hungry so I told her that I would wait for her in the food court, I bought a burger and I replied to some emails while I was eating my eyes caught glance of a woman who looked eerily similar to Veronica but she was not with Aiden. She was with a different man. Veronica was obsessed with Aiden and I didn’t think that she would ever cheat on Aiden but the more they walked closer, the more it dawned on me that the lady was in fact Veronica. She had the exact butterfly tattoo on her left wrist like Veronica had and she wore the same pendant with the letter ‘V’. I tried to hide my face with my laptop screen while at the same time tried my level best to spy on her.  She held the man the same way she held Aiden and even kissed him time to time, they were followed by a person who carried so many shopping bags of big brands like Chanel and Estee Lauder and others that I did not recognize. For the first time ever I felt such sadness for Aiden, from the way that Aiden looked at Veronica, he loved her so much. I never liked her and I did not understand how cruel she was to play with somebody’s feelings like that. Maybe they broke up? Maybe I’m just jumping to conclusions but even if they did, how could she move on so quickly? It wasn’t even my business but I couldn’t just ignore it like that. I quickly dialled Aiden, after a few rings he picked up.
“Hi. Did I disturb you?” I said.
“No actually, I was responding to some RSVPs that I received for the party. The party is going to be amazing, all the big lawyers are coming. I even asked my father and his friends to join us and they all agreed to come. There will be plenty of media coverage as well.” He said. He sounded exhausted, he must’ve been working the whole day. From the little time that we had worked together, I had noticed that he was a workaholic.
“Wow, that is great. Uh.. is Veronica coming? .. I’m only asking because she has worked hard too.” I pretended to be concerned about her presence.
“She is going to come but she might be late since she is out of town for a meeting with a client.” He said, I just wanted to scream on top of my lungs that she was in town and she was doing so much more with her ‘client’ but I did not have the guts to tell him the truth.
“Okay, See you” I quickly cut the call.
It was their business and they had to deal with their own problems. I shouldn’t interfere, I really should not. A while later Michelle was done so we headed back home.
     I struggled to keep a smile while I interacted with the guests, I was still disturbed after finding out Veronica had cheated on Aiden. I was angry at her for ruining a perfect future with a person as good as him, I would never admit to Aiden that I thought he was a great guy. I would never.
