Chapter Nine

When I was sitting by the bar not amused by the raging party that was going on, Aiden joined me.
“The party is going great” He said. I looked at him, his face glowed with innocence or was he just so stupid? How could he be so intelligent, so aware of the current affairs but be completely ignorant about his girlfriend’s affair?
“Yeah” I replied with just one word, that was my thing.
“We already got some clients through the attendees” He said as though he was expecting me to pet him and compliment him like the dog that he was. I just nodded my head and drank the gin that I had ordered earlier. I wasn’t much of a drinker but I did enjoy Gin occasionally.
“By the way, you look very beautiful” He said and he left. I felt my face turn blush pink, my heart was racing and I just sat still there without any movement, without blinking while he joined the guests who seemed to talk tirelessly.
I had never liked Aiden because of how little he made me feel without trying. In fact I despised him for always being so perfect. He was born to the best lawyer in the city, he has always been fed by a silver spoon, he was always nice and cheerful, he always had a pleasant personality, he always had the right thing to say. Whereas I had to work my way up, I had no one to guide me, my parents were not supportive of the career path that I had chose, they had never been appreciative of my interests either. You could say that I was jealous of him and that’s why I hated him. But after all the bitter feelings that I had towards Aiden, why did I feel so bad for him? Why did I care that his girlfriend was cheating on him? Why did I let something so irrelevant to me affect me?
I looked up to see the devil that I was thinking about, Veronica. She wore a red dress which looked great on her curves but I couldn’t see past the cheater that she was. She even had the audacity to kiss Aiden with the same lips that she kissed her other boyfriend. The worst thing about it was that Aiden seemed so happy to see her and he kept introducing her to the guests. I repeat, he is a dog.
“Hello Elizabeth” Veronica smiled at me.
“Hello Veronica” I faked a smile back her her.
“You look lovely” She batted her lashes at me.
“So do you” I replied.
“Are you enjoying the party?” She asked.
“Very much, I have to say” I replied.
“You know, a little birdie told me that it saw Aiden in the Pandora store, going through the finest rings in the store” She smirked.
Oh, he dare not. Why is Aiden so stupid?
“Actually I saw you at the mall today, I wanted to talk to you but you were already so, so occupied” I spat as her face turned pale proving that she was actually cheating on Aiden. After a minute of awkward silence she said,
“I am just going to stay sober and pretend that I am surprised when he pops the question” She smiled.
I wished to turn back the time to when I had taken the blind leap of faith and left Derek’s firm to work on my own; I wished I had not agreed to it. But wishes are wishes because they cannot be fulfilled.
     After a while when the house was packed with guests and it became unbearably loud, Aiden as expected told the Dj to stop and started talking on the microphone. I looked at Veronica and she was already smiling big.
“Ladies and gentleman, thank you for coming here tonight to celebrate with us the opening of me and Elizabeth’s new firm” This was followed by a round of applause.
“However, there is still so much to celebrate and to rejoice about. Today...” he walked over to where Veronica was standing and continued,
“I want to profess in front of all of you, how much I am in love with my girlfriend. Thank you Veronica for making my life so much brighter and me- so much happier” He bent his left knee and took out a small box. The crowd gasped and was watching intently.
“Miss Veronica Brooklyn, you know that I love you so much and I will do anything for you to be happy. Will you make me the happiest man on earth by marrying me?” He opened the box to reveal a gorgeous ring.
“Yes of course, I love you” She screamed and the crowd screamed along with her. He put the ring on her finger and they kissed as if that was the best thing that ever happened in both of their lives.
