"that's just the mother fucking vibes." aiko said, finishing her story.
"don't ever say that again." natalie laughed.
"do you guys hear that?" buffy asked, pausing their conversation.
sirens.
too far in the distance for anyone to hear but somehow, she heard.
"you're hearing things, ya maniac." aiko sighed.
"you're so fucking funny. but i'm being serious. i heard something." buffy replied.
red, blue.
red, blue.
red, blue.
"i fucking told you." buffy said, walking up to the door of the room they were in.
"get back in there!" the black haired man yelled at them, closing and locking the door from the outside and walking towards the front door.
cop cars and fire trucks pulled up in front of house.
soon a bunch of police officers and fire fighters broke though the back door and windows that weren't boarded up.
"fucking finally!" buffy yelled, "yo! we're in here! get us out!"
"somebody's in here. grab a blanket." an officer yelled out.
"there's three of us. can ya open the door now?" aiko shouted.
"get two more! guys, i'm gonna need you to stand clear."
after a couple of seconds, the door was kicked open by a person in a bullet proof vest and a gun.
"first aid! outside!" the officer yelled, "there's a person right there that's going to help you three get to the first aid. well get you guys in an ambulance."
"hello." a female officer waved, holding three blankets and bullet proof vests, "put these on and walk with me.
the three girls put the vests over their heads and the blankets over the shoulders.
"alright. come with me." she held their hands and lead them to the fire truck's ledge, "just sit here and we'll bring you some food. if you see one of your family members, you're allowed to go get them."
"is that the news?" natalie pointed to the news van pulling up near the driveway.
"of course it's the news." aiko sighed, "the corruption of this earth is so-"
"shut up about the corruption of the earth, aiko."
"if the news is here, that means that our families are getting notifications or something that we're safe." buffy pointed out, still staring into space, "aiko, you'll get to see your new brother!"
"why aren't you excited for your family to find you?"
"i only have my cousin and her family now. my mom died and my dad's had on and off custody of me since i was six."
"oh. i'm sorry."
"no. don't be. you'll get to have your mother and aiko gets to have her brother. that's enough happiness for me to have. gah! i can't believe it. we're out."
"it feels surreal." aiko added.
"nat!" natalie's mom yelled for her.
"mom!" she ran over to him and jumped in his arms.
"aiko. i think that's your brother." buffy pointed to the older women holding a blonde baby boy.
"mom!" aiko ran over to them.
"where's your family?" kira came over and sat next to her.
"fuck you." buffy hugged her, but kira squeezed her as hard as she could.
"i missed your stupid ass." she sniffled, "it was difficult. trying not to cry when your best friend is missing. but she's back."
"don't get on that sappy shit with me." buffy laughed.
"hey girls," the female officer called them back, "we need to get you to the hospital right now. your families won't be able to come in right away, but i'm pretty sure they'll be able to come in later."
"take your phone. text me every second so i know you're okay." kira handed buffy the red iphone xr with a clear phone case, and a polaroid of her and her friend group at andi's fifteenth birthday party.
"i have missed the little box so much."
"i can't believe i have you back again." kira engulfed her in another hug.
"they can ride with you in the ambulances, but we have to go now." the officer said, opening the door of the ambulances.
