It wasn't a question of how.

More like why.

Why was he the only one who paid attention to her?

Why did her heart flutter whenever he was around?

Why did he think it was so cute when she did her fierce hunting cry?

Why did she daydream about him?

Why did he want to spend time with her more than any of the other Dragonets?

Oh Yes, it was nothing like either of them had experienced before. And she couldn't tell anyone, what if she sounded crazy? And he couldn't figure it out!

Sunny was in a dilemma.

Clay was in a pickle. Mmm . . . Pickles . . .

No Clay. The MudWing scolded himself internally. No pickles.

Maybe I could tell Clay himself, he might know what to do. Sunny thought.

Maybe I should ask other dragons? Clay thought.

Neither knew what they were feeling. They didn't know what to do about it, or how to adjust.

They were just trying not to look foolish.

They stumbled over their own words.

Clay always left her little gifts, but never thought anything more of it.

Sunny always saved him the biggest piece of prey whenever they were eating together.

In his nightmares, she was taken away from him.

In her daydreams, they were together all the time and happy beyond belief.

Again, neither thought anything of it.

Or did anything either.

So they smiled at each other everyday.

They laughed and talked late into the night.

Her face light up whenever he entered a room.

His heart began to race whenever she hugged him, which was constantly.

His eyes were the most beautiful of any dragon she had ever seen.

Gold like her scales were his favourite colour, though he never knew why.

Hearts intertwined, forever and always.

Soulmates, if you would.

They were best friends, and they didn't know they wanted more.

They were happy.

At least, as far as anyone knew.

No one ever figured it out, though sometimes someone wondered.

So even thought he loved her with all his heart.

And she loved him with all of hers.

Neither ever knew.

Not even until their last breaths.

But it's okay, they were still happy.

Even if they're hearts weren't whole.

A\N: Ok this one got surprisingly deep, but it's been sitting in my drafts for waaayyyy too long, soooo... enjoy?
