Sundew crouched next to her egg, lost in thought. This dragon would be the next generation of HiveWing killing, Leafspeak weapony LeafWings. It was herself and Madrakes egg.
Willow . . . Oh Willow. Sundew missed her dearly, everyday, but they had decided it was to dangerous to be together a few years ago. This egg was probably the only dragon she would ever love again.
Crack!
Sundew glanced down at the dark green egg, it was hatching.
"Mandrake!" Sundew yelled for her mate, wrapping her talons around the shell.Mandrake came leaping into the clearing, Belladonna trailing behind him.
Sundew groaned internally.
It's bad enough I had this egg, but now my Mother is taking an interest in it? Curse my awful luck!
She knew that Belladonna should be here for the hatching, but still!
"What should we do?" Mandrake panted, coming to a stop beside her.
"Nothing." Belladonna said calmly. "It will hatch if it is strong."
Sundews heart ached. That was just the type of thing Willow would have wrinkled her snout at.
She shook off the thought.
That part of my life is over. Now I have to teach this dragon to destroy the HiveWings.
The egg continued to crack, small pieces falling out of its tough shell.
A small slender snout poked out of a large hole and sniffed at Sundew, then the rest of the dragonet scrambled out and lay down on top of her outstretched talon. The small LeafWing looked quite like its mother, Sundew thought proudly, with it gold flecked neck and spine. She had Mandrakes soft brown underbelly and back fin, and Sundews wing shape and scale pattern.
She was beautiful.Mandrake reaches out and gently stroked his new dragonets head. Her eyes fluttered open and she reached for his talons with a soft squeaking noise.
Sundew lifted her to eye level and examined her more carefully, her eyes were, Sundew noticed with a twinge of disappointment, exactly like Hemlocks.
Then she put down her daughter and tucked her under her wings, before looking to the watching dragons again.
"Waterwheel." She declared. "Her name will be Waterwheel."Mandrake nodded, watching his dragonets face. Belladonna shrugged.
"You will train her?" She asked.
"Yes." Sundew answered instantly. There was no way she let her daughter be trained by Belladonna. Her mother nodded.
"She will be a fierce warrior."
Sundew just looked back down at Waterwheel, now peacefully sleeping in the curve of her mother's side.I will protect you, Waterwheel. She vowed silently. I will never let Belladonna hurt you.
And so it went, the dragon who was destined to end the HiveWings slept close to her mother. Happily unknowing.
