Train ride

It all began on a train ride to Zurich. I was on my way to a workshop hosted by my school. And since all my friends picked other workshops than me, I ended up going to the train station alone. It was oddly calm for a train station when I arrived in the morning. When I finally convinced my body to move out of the cozy and warm bus, that's where I saw her. Standing next to the vending machines. Natalie had middle long blonde hair and brown eyes. She was looking at her phone, ocassionally looking up to scan her surroundings. Although Natalie has been in our class for over two months by now. I never had the chance to talk to her. And I didn't really try. I have just gone through a break up a couple weeks earlier. I wasn't really in the mood to meet new people. But since Natalie was one of the few classmates, who picked the same workshop as me, we decided to meet up at the train station and take the same train. When I slowly approached her, she looked up to me and gave me a smile.

"Hi", she casually greeted me.

"Ready to go ?", I asked after giving back a forced smile.

She nodded and we made our way to the plattform. We didn't had to wait too long for the train to arrive. After we found an empty section, we sat down and began to talk.

"I heard you've just broke up with your girlfriend"

"Yeah", I answered unemotionally.

My family and I used to move a lot, so I never had a lot of friends. And thus my social skills were minimal to non existent. My ex was a girl who was a year older than me. She had a lot of experience. And with a lot, I mean a lot. At the time I was so naive and thought we really fell in love with each other and that we were destined to be with each other. Retrospectively, she didn't really do something wrong. I just took the whole thing way too seriously.

A couple days ago I briefly mentioned my breakup in school right at the moment Natalie walked pass me. She acted shocked and expressed her sympathy. But I was still surprised that she would bring that up.

"What happened ?", she wanted to know.

I didn't really tell anyone too much about my breakup. I thought that my family and friends wouldn't understand me. So I kept it for myself. But it was like a weight that got heavier and heavier each day. Honestly I was praying that someone would ask me. So I caved in. I just had to tell someone all about it. Or I was going to be crushed by the weight. So I slowly started to open up and tell her about how we met, how we came together and how we broke up. She listened very tentatively. I didn't know what it was, but something about her was just so uplifting and warm. I also listened to her when she talked about how she has just moved and how much she loved music. We talked and talked, until we arrived at our destination.

"Time to get out", she said while giving me another smile.

I gave back a smile. And this time, I didn't had to force it. The workshop was pretty boring but we were able to distract the other enough to make the day go by quickly. We spent the rest of the day together. And just like that we became friends.
