As Eddy walked down the halls to his science class for the exams, he heard a faint whimper from the closet. Curious, he opened the door.

A young boy about his age sobbed in the corner, ebony bangs falling over his glasses. As he looked up into Eddy's eyes, he could see they were bloodshot with tears.

"Hey, um, are you doing alright?" Eddy asked, pained that the boy was hurting so much.

The boy shook his head. "Bullies, they-"
"Shh, it's alright," Eddy tried to comfort him as he put his hand on his shoulder.

"Thank you... for being nice to me," the kid with glasses finally managed to whisper.

"Aw of course buddy," Eddy wrapped his arm around him, holding him. Brett leaned on Eddy's shoulder as his sobs started to ebb.

"Don't, don't you have class this period?" the boy stuttered.

"It's fine, it doesn't matter. What's your name by the way?"
For the first time the boy smiled, revealing his adorable braces. "Brett."
"Nice, my name's Eddy."

That was the first day he had ever failed a test. But he had discovered something(one) much more important.

"First time you dated eh?" Brett laughed as the two of them walked towards the little diner.

Eddy chuckled in response. "Yeah, with a guy nonetheless. But I wouldn't want it any different."
Brett smiled sweetly, wrapping his arm around the other boy. "I'm so grateful to be with you. And we're still together even in uni."
"Thank you, I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Me neither," Brett's eyes started tearing up.

Then Eddy realized he was tearing up as well. "Hey, let's not cry." Impulsively he scooped Brett in his arms.

Brett clung to his neck for dear life, then laughed. "Bro, what are you doing?
Eddy laughed. "It just felt right."
Brett gently kissed him on the neck. "I agree."

"I now pronounce you husband and husband," the priest announced.

Joyously Brett and Eddy kissed each other on the lips, wrapping their arms around each other. They had made a commitment to one another to not do the deed with anyone, including each other, until they married. Not necessary for their relationship, but it made it deeper and stronger -- something even death could not separate.

"Thank you for waiting for me," Brett whispered in Eddy's ear.

"I wouldn't want it any different," Eddy responded.

Then, Eddy scooped Brett up in his arms and held him. By this point, Brett had gotten used to Eddy impulsively carrying him, instinctively wrapping his arms around his neck.

Joyously Eddy walked back down the aisle, holding his spouse in his arms.

"I love you Brett, so much."
Brett smiled. "I love you too sweetheart."

The next morning, Eddy was in a joyous mood. He poked Brett in the ribs. "Guess what mate??? We're married!"
Brett laughed. "I know right?"
Then Eddy grabbed his husband.

"Honey, what are you doing?" Brett giggled as Eddy carried him down the stairs.

"Bringing you out to the patio so we can watch the sunrise together," Eddy laughed.

And thus began their daily tradition -- one they would carry out to the last days.

Eddy pulled into the parking lot nervously. The air of tension hung. "So you said the tumor on your neck is getting worse?"
Brett nodded sadly.

The appointment proved their biggest fears. Brett had cancer.

His eyes bloodshot in grief, Eddy just sat in the driveway, unable to move. Brett reached out to touch his shoulder. "Eddy, it's gonna be alright."
"You're the one going through this. I don't know why I have to be this way," Eddy stammered.

"You're going through a lot too, Eddy. You're doing so well even now, I love you so much, more than you could ever know."
Eddy smiled slightly through his tears. "I love you too," he whispered.

"Carry me into the house then?" Brett smiled.

Eddy nodded. "Of course, love." He walked around to the other side of the car, opening it for Brett and lifting him out.

"He only has three months to live. I'm sorry," the doctor reported.

Eddy collapsed in a puddle of tears. Brett, his hair now completely gone from chemotherapy, couldn't help but cry as well.

Then Eddy noticed Brett crying. He pulled him into his lap and held him. "Brett, baby, please don't cry," he choked through tears.

"I can't help it... I-I'm sorry," he sobbed.

"No, it's alright. I'm the one who should be comforting you, I'm sorry," Eddy responded.

"It's just... do you think I'm ugly?" Brett looked into Eddy's eyes. "You know, now that I'm all pale and don't have hair."

"Brett, I could never find you ugly! You're the most incredible person I know." Eddy cried. "I love you so much, Brett, so much."

They slept next to each other on the bed. Throughout the weeks Brett had progressively become weaker. Now, they never knew when would be his last night.

"Hey Eddy," Brett nuzzled closer. "Are you still awake?"
Eddy nodded. "Of course love."

Brett sighed. "I'm really sorry about all I've made you go through in life."
Eddy felt ready to cry. "Brett, you are my life. Don't ever say that again. I love you more than anything else in this world. Without you, life is not worth living."
"But Eddy, if I die... please keep going without me. I want you to be successful."
"But Brett, I can't!" Eddy cried.

"Please promise," Brett stared intensely into Eddy's eyes. "For me."
Eddy whimpered. "I will... for you."

Brett smiled. "I know this is really hard for you to do. I just want what's best for you."
Eddy wrapped his arms around Brett, holding him. "Thank you for being so selfless."

The next morning, the morning sun peaked through the curtains. Eddy woke up to him still clinging onto Brett. But he felt stiff, unmoving, cold.

Lifeless.

No, he didn't die. He couldn't die.

"Brett, love, are you here?" Nothing. "Please Brett, wake up," Eddy gently shook him. Nothing.

"Please don't be dead, please don't be dead," Eddy cried over his friend. Then he heard a faint, still voice from the night before.

"Keep going Eddy, for me."

"But I can't," Eddy cried.

"I want you to be successful."

"Please don't be gone," he whispered.

He didn't know what else to do. Desperately he held Brett in his arms, lifting him up and out to the patio like they did every morning. Except Eddy knew this would be the last time.

"I know you can't hear me, but I love you Brett..." Eddy choked in sobs. "So much."
