Just a little thing a couple Twitter friends wanted me to write (I think), will get back to the Pirates of the Indian in the next chapter I promise.
Brett opened the door and turned on the lights. As he looked at the little glimmer of rising sun from the quiet, empty room, he briskly walked to his desk right next to the boss's office, turning on his computer and looking at the notifications. He found it odd that he hadn't walked by his boss yet, only this cheeky 20-something-year-old, but whatever.
Excel Spreadsheet to be done tonight. Powerpoint for meeting tomorrow. Email from his boss to the whole company titled "Retirement."
Wait what?
Quickly Brett clicked on the email, terror in his heart. Henry Chen, the man who he had worked for for years? Henry Chen, the man who saw potential in him in the first place? Henry Chen, his close mentor and friend?
This had to be a horrible joke.
"Dear Friends and Staff," the letter read. "I apologize for this letter being so sudden, but I am afraid that I will have to retire. My heart issues have been getting worse, and the doctor said the only way to slow it down is to reduce stress. As a result, I will be having my son, Eddy Chen, take my place. I apologize for the suddenness. I just want you to know, I appreciate you all dearly and hope for your continued success. Best wishes, Henry Chen."
Brett closed the tab in shock. The night before his boss had insisted on staying late -- even later than him.
Now he knew why.
For a moment, Brett just stood there, his head in his hands. What was happening? But then the creaking door alerted him.
"Is this Brett Yang?" There was that cheeky kid again.
Brett gave him a glare that screamed 'watch it buddy.' "Yes, this is Brett Yang. I am assuming you are the person taking Henry Chen's place."
"Why, I mean if you look at it that way, yes. I prefer to think of myself as the former boss's son, and now leader of this prestigious company. Anyways, papers for you to read through and the schedule. Didn't organize them yet, but I'm sure you have a moment to."
Brett snorted angrily as he took the papers. This kid was SO cheeky. But as he looked into the dude's eyes, he felt something different.Almost like affection.
Brett shook his head and snorted again. Probably just because he looked a little like his father. But that kid's personality was something else.
"Anyways, gotta go. Mind sitting in at the morning meeting for me?"
"What appointment do you have?" Brett made an excuse. "So I can let them know why you're absent.""Um, uh, at a coffee shop I-."
Brett shook his head. "Bro, just say you're having lunch with a colleague to help you learn more about work here." He didn't even know why he was making excuses for his behavior, but he was.Eddy nodded. "Yeah sounds good." With that he walked out, leaving Brett to do all the work.
'This dude's gonna be a blast, alright,' Brett mused sarcastically.
When Eddy came back, a bubble tea in his hands, he looked directly at Brett. Brett, tired from the chaotic events throughout the day his boss should have taken care of along with his own work, ignored him and kept typing.
"Hey Brett?"
"What do you want?" Brett muttered.Eddy set down the bubble tea. "To thank you for uh, yeah. Also, I was doing some work there too, like files and stuff."
"Yeah sure." Seriously, the dude was now lying to his face?
"Bro I'm telling the truth. It's just the coffee shop is more familiar to me so it's easier to work there."
Brett laughed dryly. "Well, here it doesn't really matter where you feel comfortable, you just do your work. Also, as a boss you don't just sit around and do paperwork. You have to help the staff out too."Eddy walked off silently.
For a moment Brett felt bad, but honestly the dude kinda deserved it. Kinda. Maybe.
Brett looked at the bubble tea, a million thoughts through his head. Should he drink it? Did he deserve it after snapping at Eddy?
However, his addiction to the beverage won out. Even then, as he sipped it, all he could think of was Eddy. That energetic, mischievous gait. His twinkling eyes. His toned-No, he did not just go there.
Brett sighed and returned to typing, trying to keep from thinking about that annoying dude while sipping the bubble tea.
