5 | audio messages and dry humour

The only good thing that was going to come out of this assignment, Jacob thought as he lay on his bed after sending a particularly disinterested reply to his project partner, was the opportunities it provided for exercising his penchant for dry humour.

He couldn't help but grin as he imagined Jessica reading his message and going in what he assumed to be typical overachiever frenzy. There would probably be a frantic message. Maybe he would be lucky enough to find himself with a new, similarly disinterested partner if she complained about him.

His smile dropped suddenly and he got up, leaving his phone on the bed, to walk across the room. There wasn't much that could be called personalized in his room. It looked pretty much the same as it had two months ago when his maternal aunt had dropped him off to Uncle William's. This change was one in a series of changes. Every couple of years or so, he would find himself being handed from one relative to another and by now, he was so used to it that he didn't believe on unpacking. His suitcase and backpack were the only additions to the room. That was all he had when he arrived and all he planned to take when he would have to leave.

He was in the process of taking out a towel and heading for the shower when he heard the familiar beep of his phone.

Pain In The Ass: *Audio message*

Jacob sighed and after two-three minutes of staring at his screen he put the phone to his ear. The recorded voice was most condescending and really fast-spoken, "Look I cannot type so much so I'm sending you an audio message. You better listen to this, lazybum. WE are doing this art project because it's a CREDIT project that will give us 20%, I repeat 20%, of History marks. God! How can you be so dense, Jacob? I promise you, if you don't cooperate I will...I will...I will do something. I'm not telling you what. Not because I don't know what yet. Of course, I know what. Anyway, the point is, you better start working on it because I assure you the teacher will NOT give you marks for your eyes or your hair or...or..."

Jacob listened with a slight smile as Jessica continued, "Uh, I'd better stop because I'm probably wasting my time. You won't even hear this probably. You know what? I don't care. BYE! Actually, no, I do but ugh. Okay, bye."

He could hear someone cheering in the background and for the first time in a long while he wondered what would happen if this Jessica chick decided to stick along.
