Qui and Whisper walked through the dark tunnel, the only light dancing around the fingers of the magic jester.
"Soooo....." She started to interrupt the silence. "What are-"
"No."
"But I didn't even-"
"Shut."
"Why can't-"
"No. No words."
"Pleas-" He put a gloved finger to her lips.
"Sh." The two of walked in silence for an unknown time frame. Unlit torches were scattered along the walls but it seemed Whisper didn't notice-or care- and when she tried to speak he silenced her. She loved sound, that's why she became a bard, after all! This was getting to her last nerve. Finally, after trying to point out more torches they passed, she whirled on him, taking a deep breath to start a fight.
"Listen here, jester! Stop shushing me! I have the right to talk! Just because you don't like it when I talk-"
"Please." He sounded weaker than before. "Stop yelling."
"Fine." She returned to normal volume. "But I'm talking whether you like it or not."
"Whatever. Just," He sighed. "No more screaming. You're making my ears bleed."
"Really? I can-"
"I'm fine." He waved her off, forgetting that he had fire in that hand, and killed it. He snapped and a new light purple flame sprang to his willfire fingers. They continued.
"Why did you sound weak when I started yelling?"
"I hate it when people yell." He said quietly. She nodded.
"Sorry, then."
"It's fine." She hung her head a little. "It's fine, really! Don't worry. You'd be surprised what I deal with when Zamista and Arthkika start fighting and the king has to get involved." He smiled in a fake manner. Were all of his smiles fake? Was he ever happy? "I mean, really! It makes sense on how they wouldn't understand why I hate loud noises, they know nothing about-" He did that whole cutting himself off thing and cleared his throat.
"Know about what?" She asked, curiosity pushing aside the warnings her mind gave her about him teleporting her arm off, or throwing the fire at her, or worse.... teleporting her violin and bow. Or just her violin to watch her suffer with the bow.
"Not important. Focus on the magic search thing."
"But I wanna know! You can't just drop an interesting topic like that and not tell more!"
"Please," He looked upset. "Stop."
"Fine." She huffed. Qui didn't want to push him too far. Up ahead she saw a large thing dangling from a rope. "What's that?"
"Dunno. We'll see soon." It was far, ish. She only saw the outline.
"Hey, what magic does that nurse have?"
"Who, Dr Nola?" She nodded. "I think she can teleport. Not far, though. She could've came with us."
"She seemed too sad to do that. Hope she didn't do anything rash." The thing was in an open area.
"Yeah." The object was closer, and she faintly smelled death. They got close enough to see the thing clearly.
Oh no.
Oh nonononono.....
Dr Nola hung by a fiberglass rope tied around her neck, which was attached to a series of rocks above. A ladder sat overturned nearby. How did she beat them here? Oh yeah. The teleporting thing.
Qui touched the body gently to see if she reacted. She didn't.
"Why would she do this?" Qui whispered finally, tears dripping down her face. Whisper didn't seem stunned. "Whisper, do you see this?"
"I do." He sounded nonchalant. That made her angry. This woman just hung herself! Why didn't he care?
"What is your issue? Why are you ok with this?!"
"I'm not. People kill themselves and die all of the time."
"That doesn't explain anything!"
"Well, they do. Everybody dies in the end, whether they do it themselves, someone else does it, they get sick, or just...well, die. It's that simple."
"How can you say that? Have you ever even lost someone before?" He looked away from the body. They went down the hallway further. "Well? Answer me!" She grabbed his fireless arm, jerking him her way and stopping the walking process. His face....
Tears ran from under the mask down his face. His mouth was set in a sad position, like hooks were grabbing his lips and yanking them down in a horrid frown. His teeth were slightly apart.
"...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-I mean, I-"
"Stop."
"I'm sorry. I understand, I-"
"Shut up."
"I under-"
"Shut the fuck up."
"I...I..."
"You don't understand. How could you understand? You wouldn't! You've never had to watch a friend get mutilated into another, begging for mercy as the villian stitches her lips shut to stop her screams for death! You shut your fucking mouth about understanding! Understand my pain? Funny! Ha! I thought I was the funny one, you stupid shitshow cumdrinking fuckbrain!" He pulled his arm free and stomped forwards. She was frozen in place. What...what just happened?
She followed after a second, jogging towards the flames that lit the area.
The flames suddenly died and Whisper let out a howling scream.
