The world was quickly changing. People were beginning to gain abilities that seemed straight out of comic books or fantasy worlds. Never in a thousand years had any living person thought that this would all occur.

It all began in China, Qingqing City to be more exact. There was news that a baby that gave off light was born. Ever since then, superpowers were discovered in various places, and time passed without the cause being identified. Before anyone knew it, the supernatural became normal, and dreams became reality. The world had become a superhuman society, and about 80% of the world's population now had some kind of special trait. In this world swirling with chaos, the profession that everyone once dreamed about and admired came into the limelight.

It was now the age of heroes.

However, there can't be light without darkness. Along with the superpowers came an explosive increase in crime. As the country was stuck in the slow progress of drastic law reforms, courageous people started performing heroic acts from out of comic books. Guarding against superpowers and defending against evil using their own powers (commonly referred to as quirks). Heroes were soon accepted by the public, and it was established as an official position. Based on their performance, they are paid by the government and gain renown among the masses.

In this new world, the profession that children dreamed of achieving was that of being a hero. For one small, green-haired child, this was no different.

Izuku Midoriya. His father had left him and his mother, Inko, and he had barely heard from him since. Inko quickly took charge and took over the role of father, mother, and best friend to Izuku. She loved her son dearly and always longed to give him the best life. Even if it meant working multiple shifts to buy him all of that All Might merchandise. Even if it meant sleepless nights to put food on the table. Even if it meant giving up any free time to spend some quality time with her son. She loved her son to death.

Izuku was a regular kid. He went to school, behaved, and made friends. One of those friends was Katsuki Bakugou, a blonde, red-eyed young boy with a fiery personality. The young Izuku looked up to his friend in so many ways. However, that all changed when the young Katsuki developed his own quirk, the ability to create small explosions in his hands, he became more cocky and arrogant. He thought of himself as better than everyone around him and began to mistreat his fellow friends, especially Izuku.

The green-haired boy was falling behind his other classmates, waiting for his quirk to come. The teasing at school was getting worse as more time went on, however it did not deter him.

"Mom! Mom, the computer!" The young Izuku tugged at his mother, trying to get her to follow him.

"Again?" The single mother questioned. Her voice was gentle and playful, not cold and annoyed. She truly was curious to see what had her son all excited but she had an idea of what it was.

"Hurry!" He quickly took a seat in his swivel chair. The chair spun around and bumped into the young mother, causing her to let out a laugh at his antics. Her eyes landed on the screen.

"This video again?" She questioned her son. "Jeez, you've probably added ten thousand views just by yourself, Izuku. It's too scary for me. I can't watch it."

That was an old video. A disaster that happened a long time ago. The video of a hero that debuted right after that. The one they call All-Might.

The mother knew that video by heart, having to listen to it on repeat due to her son's fascination. Every time he's called her over, she doesn't watch the video. Instead, she focuses on his expressions. He always seemed so invested in them. A look of excitement graced his features as his smile grew wide.

The child looked at his mother with bright eyes. "He's so cool! Once I get my Quirk, I wanna be like him, too! HAHAHAHAHA!" He attempted to mimic his idol's laugh. This caused the young mother to laugh along with him before attacking him with butterfly kisses.

But of course, his words brough her concern. Inko, being the concerned mother she is, took him to the doctor to get information as to why his quirk was not developing. The news that they got was not pleasant in the slightest.

After many tests that were run and x-rays that were taken, the doctor came to one final conclusion. That conclusion broke the mother's heart and shattered the young boy's spirit.

"You should probably give it up."

The boy was in shock. His eyes were wide and he lost grip of his favorite figurine.

"That's...is something wrong with him after all? Most of the other kindergarteners' Quirks have already manifested.... He's the only one...." She trailed off, placing a hand on her son's back in attempts to comfort him.

"Excuse me, but you're fourth generation, right ma'am? May I ask about your Quirk?"

"Yes, of course," she looked over her son in worry. "I can pull small objects to me." She did exactly that, pulling her son's figurine up slowly using her quirk. "My ex-husband can breathe fire."

"Normally, by age four, he would have manifested one of those Quirks, or some combination of the two." The doctor began to explain what was going on. "In the past, when the superpowers first started showing up, the results of an early research study were published. It became common practice to see if the pinky toe was missing a joint or not.

When parts of the body aren't used, they're deemed unnecessary. People who didn't have the joint were thought to be a newly evolved form." He turned in the light to display an x-ray of Izuku's foot. "You can see by looking at this x-ray that Izuku has two joints. It's unusual to see that these days, but that means he has no Quirk."

That news was Earth-shattering for the young boy. As soon as the two arrived home, he went to his room and sat in front of the computer. He emerged himself in dozens of All Might videos once again. The concerned mother walked in to check up on her son.

"Mom.... He saves everyone with a smile, no matter what trouble they're in.... He's such a cool hero..." he turned to face his mother, tears forming and on the verge of falling. Inko's eyes welled up as well. "Can I be a hero too?"

The mother was heartbroken. All she wanted was to give her son the best life. There was nothing she could do to ease his pain. If it were possible, she would have given up her quirk to give it to him. With a heavy heart, she walked slowly toward her son. The woman embraced him, collapsing into her knees and crying. "I'm sorry, Izuku! I'm sorry. I'm sorry!" Both of them began to cry. It hurt Izuku to know that he's never be able to live his dream. Inko was torn apart because this was the one thing she couldn't do anything about.
