"Sanniee oppa!!! Come out, you need to eat cake with us before everyone else comes and it's gone!"
The lock of the room of the dark brown haired boy clicked and a figure swallowed up in a giant hoodie came out.
"Yes Dana-ah, tell mommy I went to the bathroom first", San told the little girl in a pretty dress while squatting down. She happily waddled away making San smile.
He got out of his squat quickly walking to the bathroom next to his room. Not even 10 seconds went by and San came out again, only having fixed his usually kinda messy hair.
Already knowing he will not like the next few hours, he walked down the staircase. "Here goes nothing", he thought while a few dozens of eyes were now laid on him.A nervous chuckle came from his mother, who has made her way up to the young male. "Here comes the life of the party, haha", going on, she sternly whispered in his ear, "Why aren't you wearing your suit?".
San answered through his teeth that he was showing off in a big, gigantic fake smile "I forgot hanging it up after Yoojin noona put it on my couch. It's all wrinkled up now."
She let her gaze go around the crowd of people as she gently pushed him towards them. "Go greet your guests, you can do whatever you want when you talked to everyone."
Time flew by as San greeted each and every one of the men and women he barely knew. They all seemed to know more childhood stories about him than he did. Another compliment here, then a complaint about the waste of his beauty that is his current outfit. One of his mother's friends even tried to introduce him to her daughter, which he kindly refused, excusing himself with being busy studying. The house and garden was getting more and more packed, in comparison to the normally empty halls.
Just as he was about to give up on his best friend ever showing up, his phone rang."Hongjoong?! Where the heck are you? You can't just leave me alone like this!"
|"Look, I'm sorry, San. I missed the
bus by a few seconds. I was at the mall and it took a little longer than I expected. I just wanted to bring you a surprise present, you know, since you told me you didn't want anything. I figured I should still-"|"Hongjoong-ah..."
|" Yes, Sannie?"|
"Just take the next one....and you better not bring a sh*itty ass present", San smiled through the phone.
|"On my way!"|
Hongjoong hung up and San found himself in the kitchen, having gone there while talking to his friend.
He quickly got him and himself a slice of cake and went back up to his room again. It knocked a few times before San's door was opened by a small, red haired male. He grinned eyeing the giant slices of cake standing on top of San's desk. Jokingly humming Happy Birthday, he made his way to San and the cake.
"Happy Birthday!!!", he said pulling out a box from his bag handing it over to San.
"This better not be condoms or alcohol, you know my mom would kill me if our housekeeper found this."
"Jeez, you're being pathetic again, Sannie! You forgot not everyone is as evil as your mother, especially not Han Yoojin."
"My mom's not evil....", San mumbled as he unwrapped the box and started opening it. "OMG IT'S THE NEW SET OF WATERCOLOR MARKERS!"
"See, I told ya I'm totally reliable today."
"Today? Nahhhh, you're a pretty good friend all year round you know that Kim Hongjoong?", San nudged his best friend slightly.
"It's alright, I owe it to you for being my friend too, you know? Now give me the cake."
San scoffed handing over a plate to Hongjoong and started eating his slice as well.
"Do you remember last year, when Mingi and Yunho came too and we had a water balloon fight in the garden and everyone in a 10 meter radius got wet, like half of the guests? Your mom was so pissed we weren't allowed to come for two months!", Hongjoong laughed and San started chuckling, his mouth stuffed with cake, pointing at him with his fork in agreement.
"Or that one time when we were like eight and went up to eat cake just like we do now, except that we brought two whole ass cakes and ate it all."
"Oh my god, I think I still have a sugar rush from that day. Why are we eating this much cake again?"
"Cause you only turn 18 once, Choi San."
"Yeah, right...", San said looking out of the window down at the garden full of people he didn't know.
"Yah, cheer up! You're not even that much of a party kid. I thought you enjoyed quiet birthdays and small gatherings."
"Yeah, but this is just not it. I wanted to have all of you guys around me. All four of us together.", he sighed.
Hongjoong looked at his friend, pouting "Am I not good enough? I can leave if you want...".
"You know that's not what I meant, I'm glad you came. It's definitely way better than being with all those strangers."
"Hey, that's what best friends are for."
Hongjoong got up and hugged the other. They continued talking and reminiscing all birthdays San spent with his small group of friends in order to escape his family's posh gatherings. They made him feel normal.
That is until they leave, and San is alone in the big house full of frames empty of memories but filled with scribbles only the rich can afford.
San hated being part of an 'exclusive society' he didn't feel like he fit in.
He much rather walked around in hoodies and vans than suits and leather shoes.
As the sun finally began to set, the heat of the day turned into a mild and comfortable weather, making San decide to open his window and spend the rest of the evening sitting on the window sill scrolling through his phone."What's this?", he thought opening an ad on a YouTube video.
