"I'm sorry ma'am, you said... a book for your daughter? That's it? ... That's all you're giving me to work with?" You cocked your head at the woman in front of you. She looked exhausted, and her belly was swollen from pregnancy. Her messy bun was falling apart, and she had bags under her eyes and a giant purse.
"Yes. A book. A book. El libre. I don't have time for this, my son's got a soccer game in ten minutes and my daughter needs a book for class. My kids are waiting in the car!" She slammed her giant bag on the counter.
"Uhhhh," You paused, squeezing your eyes shut, trying to think. Your head was starting to ache from her aggravating tone.
All you could think about was your grandfather across the country. He was going through a health scare, and you were stuck at your brain numbing job in the library. How fun.
You tried to talk to the woman softer. "Well, what sort of books does your daughter like?"
She checked her watch in a passive-aggressive fashion. "I don't have time for this!" She froze to give you a clearly forced smile. "Do you happen to know the way to William's Oak Library?"
You blinked rapidly, your eyebrows raised at the woman's sass. William's Oak Library was the only other library in town, and your boss' only competition. You fought the urge to snap at her, before forcing a smile yourself. "Nope. I don't."
The woman gave a jerky head tilt, before stalking out of the library, clearly proud of herself. Your boss, a ginger woman with way too much understanding for her own good, appeared from behind an aisle of books, and approached you, a box of YA novels in her arms. You'd never seen her raise her voice before, and were pretty sure you never would. Her name was Marcy.
"Yeesh. That sounded harsh. I'm sure she was just having one of those days," Marcy paused to set the box down on the counter. "You alright?"
"How can someone be so sassy? I wish I could learn to be sassy like that. But yeah I'm okay," You said rubbing your temples with both hands. "Just tired. My grandpa is in the hospital. I haven't heard anything in awhile, you know?"
"Aww, I'm sorry."
You nodded simply.
"You can head on home, I'll close up."
"It's that time already?" You asked, glancing at the electronic watch over your wrist. She hummed in answer and after exchanging goodbyes, she disappeared between the bookshelves and you left the library.

You watched your reflection in the puddles beneath you as you walked. The person starring up at you I didn't think would ever be familiar. Does anybody ever REALLY get used to themselves? I mean sure, at first glance I can recognize myself, but if I look for awhile, I notice the little things I've never noticed before. Like the shape of my nose or how the color of my eyes almost seem different shades of that color the longer I look. If I look for long enough, that person is a stranger. It's almost like I've never seen that face before. I can see myself as other people see me. And the feeling is... Almost unsettling.
When I finally stepped into my apartment, I had a headache from concentrating to hard on things that didn't really matter. I tried to hit the light switch, but the lights didn't turn on. 'Crap.' I thought automatically. I made my way to the dinning room table so I could set my bag down and take off my long coat. The second my bag hit the table I felt a hand from behind press a rag over my nose and mouth. I let out a muffled scream and my body fell against my attackers. I would've done something, kicked them in the privates, pushed my full force against theirs so I would have pinned them to the ground, something, but my vision was already fading and my mind starting to swim in the smell of the rag as my consciousness left me.
A/N: Don't worry, normally my parts won't be this short XD, but I thought that was a good starting point. Plus it's like 1 in the morning or something so maybe I should sleep... Just a bit, you know :3
