If you were to tell me things in Forksley were going to be crazy exciting, or even "dangerous" this year, I would have probably laughed at you. But as it turns out, I was happily mistaken. Personally, it was one of my best years.
Oh, I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Sarah Renai, local vampire of Forksley. Why do I call myself a vampire? Well, to save you another story, what started as a one time joke turned into a lifestyle. To look the part, I constantly wear fake fangs and red contacts, as well as wear a lot, and I mean a lot of black. Granted, I already had more black clothes than any other color. I also wear a ring that I say protects me from the sun during one of the few days it's not cloudy here. I also carry bottles of fruit punch as my "blood supply." My teachers hate it, but I do it anyway.
Now of course, something like this doesn't bring the best attention to me at school. Most of the popular kids called me various names and said I was a weirdo for doing what I do. Some girls even said I was just jumping on the Twilight bandwagon. As if. I've been living the vampire life since before the first movie was a thing. They could take their opinions and shove it for all I care.
So what does any of this have to do with what happened this year? Well, it all started at my best friend Vi's house. We were just chilling outside on her porch swing talking while she was reading Eclipse. Apparently, there was someone new moving in the neighborhood. While we were outside, we started hearing something odd, and looked over to see some guy having some fake fight, using a rake as a weapon.
"Hey, Vi." I say, nudging her, "Look."
Vi looked up from her book and laughed a bit when she saw him.
"Wow. and they say you're weird." She replies.
"Yeah." I add.
We continued watching him until he supposedly defeated his opponent, and we both started giving our slow, semi-sarcastic claps of applause. This seemed to catch his attention, and he quickly stood and turned to us.
"I think you got him." Vi says.
"You didn't see all of that, did you?" The boy asks, dropping the rake.
"I think we can safely say that we didn't see as much as you and 'Rayzon' did." Vi adds, using air quotes around the name Rayzon.
The boy laughed nervously. "So... you two live next door?" He asked. I then noticed he had an Australian accent.
"No, we're just big fans of porch swings." I reply, "Travelling the country porch swing to porch swing. Or at least I do."
"Hope that works out for you." He responds before turning to walk away.
"Wait!" Vi says, standing, and I stand as well.
"Don't move." I add, pretending to pull out a knife and throw it at an imaginary opponent as Vi pretended to shoot one with a bow. This caused the guy to give us weird looks.
"There were some behind you." Vi says.
"Thanks, Katniss." He replies, "And... Tris?"
"No charge." I respond as Vi and I sit back down and she goes back to her book.
The guy started to walk away again before stopping and turning back to us.
"Hey, I was wondering, maybe because I'm new in town and all that, maybe you could-"
"Uh, uh, uh," Vi responds, "turn it around, ninja warrior. I don't date boys who play make believe."
"Well, what about you?" He asks me.
"I'll have to think about it." I respond, "But, I make no promises."
"Right, got it." He replies before leaving.
"I don't date boys who play make believe." I say mockingly once he's gone, "And yet you hang out with me."
"Hey, you're different." Vi replies.
"How is being a vampire any different from battling ninjas?" I ask.
"Well, unless you secretly battle fake hunters, that alone is different."
"Come on, it was a little bit cute."
"You think he's hot, don't you?"
"Maybe a little. And he sounds Australian. You know how much I love an Aussie accent."
"Oh I know you do. Maybe you should try talking to him more. Show him around, maybe?"
"That is, assuming he doesn't run for the hills from being scared or weirded out by me once he knows."
"He didn't seem that bothered."
"That's because he doesn't know."
"At least try." Vi says.
"Okay, fine." I respond, "But if he starts avoiding me when he finds out, I told you so. I should probably head home. See you around." I add, standing and pulling out my black parasol. Hey, just because I have a ring that protects me from the sun, doesn't mean I like to be in it, even on cloudy days.
