Side by side, we walked on,
the grass long and curling
around our ankles,
a slice of spring in a midst of rain.
Laughing, shrieking
echoing down the valley
as the others ran,
towards the sunlit sanctuary
of the woods we grew up in.I felt your gaze on me,
my heart beating, beating
faster as we walked.
An oasis of green surrounded us
on every side,
glowing, golden
with the warmth of the sun.
The air was alive with promise,
and I felt a deep, true graciousness
in my heart; how lucky I was
to be alive.Just before we reached the tree line,
I allowed my eyes to drift to the sky,
noticing, for the first time,
a faded slice of crescent moon,
glowing in pride of place in the sky.
That memory plays over in my mind,
the laughter, the joy,
the sheer magic of the world around us
at that moment in time.
My heart skipped a beat
as I looked back at you.I haven't felt happiness
like that
in a long, long time.
