Chapter Two

I wake up at the ungodly hour of 6:00 am to get ready for what will probably be the worst day of my life. After I turn off my alarm I get up off the couch, because my room isn't done yet, and open the box labeled "CLOTHES." I really wish I would've picked something out before but I don't want mom to think I'm excited or something. So I go to the second floor bathroom, that's my bathroom, and get changed.

"Winter, make sure you don't miss breakfast." my mom yells from the kitchen.

"Alright."

I do my make up very simply, because I don't feel like impressing anyone today, and straighten my hair. Before I go I take another look at the mirror and wonder, just for a split second, if anyone will like me today. Then I remember how I got here and I don't care anymore.

"I've made pancakes and sausage, your favorite breakfast." my mom says "I know today will be hard for you, so after school I'm going to take you shopping. My treat."

"Thanks mom"

"Alright, now I'll drop you off on my way to my new office. So be ready to leave in 15"

"Kay mom"

My mom works for a publishing company. She sorts through all incoming pitches and decides which ones she thinks are worth looking at. They opened up a new building here in
Indianapolis, so she transferred right after the divorce. It's not like I hate my moms job, I just wished she would've stayed in Colorado, and then I could have my old life instead of starting a new one.

"Good luck at school hun."

"Yeah"

I walk into the school I toured just yesterday and saw all the things that this Mallorie girl is probably going to bring up. I don't want to hear about the trophies or the name game. I want to go back to Colorado and be in the name game there. Anywhere else it's just annoying.

"Hi there, are you Winter?" a blond petite girl asks me.

"Yeah that's me"

"Good, hello I am Mallorie Harper. Principal Hanover said I would be showing you around today."

So this is the dance team girl. I guess she looks like a dancer. More like Sadie from my old school, but with blond, straight hair.

"Yeah"

"Okay well we have almost the same schedule so let's go to the science wing. We both have Physics first hour."

"Lead the way."

As we walk into the room everyone's head spin to the door. I can't help but feel uncomfortable with everyone looking at me like I have the plague.

"This is Winter Breelan, she's new here." Mallorie tells everyone.

"Okay, Winter you can take any empty seat you would like. And please sign your name on the seating chart." the teacher says.

I sign my name where the only empty seat is, the very center of the room. I awkwardly make my way to the desk and sit down. The teacher goes into the lesson and the attention is off of me.

When class lets out Mallorie tells me how to get to the music wing because her class is all the way to the art wing across the school.

"Good luck." she tells me and then she goes in the opposite direction.

As I make my way to the music wing I somehow get lost and wind up in the lobby again. The tardy bell rings and I'm forced to fast walk to where I think the music wing is. When I make it to room 220 I hear that they've already tuned and are beginning to practice. I walk into the room and the door slams behind me. So much for a quiet entrance. Everyone stops playing and turns my way.

"Uh, hi"

"You must be Winter, everyone this is Winter Breelan and she will be joining us this year." she announces "Did you happen to bring your viola with you?"

"I left it in here after the school tour, thing"

"This must be it" she says while handing me my viola case.

"Yeah thanks"

I take my instrument out and begin to warm up. After I am done with my exercises I see everyone has stopped playing.

"Well then, Riley, you may have some competition for first chair this year."

I look to right and see a girl, probably a Senior, shoot me a glare.

"Let's begin"

After music I have history and honors english. I breeze through those classes and get to lunch. I go to my locker, pull my lunch out and make my way to the cafeteria. It's packed and I can't find an empty table anywhere. Just when I'm about to eat lunch Mean Girls style Mallorie spots me and waves me over.
I sit down at her table as she introduces me to her friends.

"Everyone this is Winter, Winter this is Faith, Lily, and Penelope."

Faith was a red-headed girl with freckles and had all of her books on the table. Lily was Asian, though I couldn't tell exactly what ethnicity she was, and had black hair which was pin straight. Penelope was blond like Mallorie, but she had deep brown eyes and her hair was curly.

"Hi, everyone"

Then they went on to fill me in on all this school's drama. Apparently the school thrives upon it. Stephanie Jinks sleeps with everyone, don't test Quinn Miller, and Thomas Hanover was not a goody two shoes principal's kid. I need more caffeine.

As I'm waiting for my mom to pick me up someone calls my name.

"Winter, right?"

I turn around and see the guy from Lowe's coming out from the school. He's still cute, but I have to hate it here so I can go back.

"Yeah that's me"

"How did the paint turn out, good?"

"Yeah it looks good, thanks"

"That's good, you know, I've never been wrong when recommending paint"

"That's good"

"Yeah, so you need a ride, or..."

Just then I got a text from my mom saying that she was going to be late picking me up.

"Do you mind, I mean I can just walk."

"No it's no problem, I can go get my car and drive up"

"Thanks"

I text my mom and say that I got a ride and just to meet me at home. He pulled up and opened the door from the drivers seat.

"Thanks, umm..."

"Cain, Cain Andrews"

I nod and after giving him directions we end up at my house.

"Thanks again Cain"

"No problem Winter" he says with a wink and then waves goodbye.

I have a feeling that I may like it here more than I hope to.
