Harry hadn't told me much about dinner tonight, which was again, something different about dating. I mean, my other dating experiences usually meant things like a movie or baseball game... outdoor concerts or bowling. Was this standard for adult dating? That only dinner was involved in the early stages. I should have said something, to be honest. Perhaps suggested a show we could go to after dinner or an early show before dinner, but I hadn't thought much about it on Wednesday night.
Perhaps I'd better suggest something tonight if we were heading for a third date.
I didn't want to wear a black dress again, but I wasn't sure I was comfortable enough wearing a nice outfit featuring pants yet. Perhaps on a later date but on a second date it just didn't feel like the right time to pull out that outfit yet with Harry.
Maybe that was a rather telling feature.
I'd practically worn pants on every date outside the fancy dress up dates and if I was going out with Cam, I wouldn't have even questioned the option of wearing pants. Roommate dates were like that.
Since I ruled out pants, I went with a gray pencil skirt with a black sweater that I wore with a belt to enhance the hourglass shape I could rock when I wanted to. I wore my hair in a straight ponytail and spent time putting in my contacts and doing my make-up. Cam had been nice and avoided the bathroom while I was getting ready and I appreciated the uninterrupted access to the best mirror in the house. I was trying to find my heels, hopping around on one foot after stubbing my toe on my dresser when the bell rang. "Cam... can you get that? It's probably Harry." I called out.
"Sure." He said.
I heard the door open and I heard him invite Harry in, but the sounds were muffled, and I wasn't really paying attention because I had to dash into the bathroom to put on my lipstick since I'd forgotten it earlier.
I heard the door shut again, but I figured that was just because it had remained open and Cam finally shut it. "I'm ready..." I said, putting my earrings in as I walked down the hall. I frowned slightly, finding only Cam and Eiffel in our living room. "Oh, did he go down to flag a taxi?" I asked, smiling.
"Jess..." Cam tilted his head.
"No worries. I'll just go meet him." I nodded, reaching for my phone and purse before heading out the door. He called my name again, but I didn't look back at him, just allowed the door to shut behind me. I quickly headed down the stairs and out the front door, my gaze scanning the people waiting on the sidewalk, looking for any sign of Harry in the crowd.
Odd.
No Harry.
I put my hand over my eyes against the sudden sunlight that threatened to blind me and looked the other way. My phone buzzed inside my purse, but I ignored it, as I continued to scan and search the street for Harry. The buzzing stopped as I finally gave up on searching for him. I pulled my phone out to find a series of text messages from Harry.
H: Sorry...
H: Something came up. I mean, I can't go out with you.
H: tonight. Rather, any night. You're a nice girl.
H: I should just stop talking. I'm sorry.
H: honest. I just... it was nice meeting you, Jessica.
I frowned at my phone for the longest time, the crowd on the sidewalk had disappeared into taxi cabs or uber cars. Apparently a second date was not my forte this time around. I dropped my phone back in my purse and headed back towards our building, having wandered almost a block away.
