Monday morning.
I dragged myself out of bed and prepared for school. As always, I delayed everyone in the bus and minutes later we were in sch- mini prison.
I joined others under where the music club was situated. For some reason or the other that I didn't know about, I felt sick, or better still, I WAS sick.
It was 8 o'clock, the arms (wooden-fake-guns) went up, the flag also was drawn up, the nation's anthem and school anthem was sang. I was barely myself as I walked to my class after the assembly and during break today was our maths test. Nawa sef for all this maths teachers.
I had not even prepared enough For the so called maths test which was general, meaning the whole SS2 set were writing it at the Same time.
Same question, same timing, same everything that pertained to the maths test for the 3rd term.
Dropping into my seat, I was greeted with the usual loud frustrating noise of my classmates. Those ones never agreed to shut up for once in their life.
I pulled open my jotter where my time table was written and looked at what we were having this morning. Biology. I sighed. That woman was another case entirely.
The noise got louder and I raised my head to see the boys i called classmates yelling and jumping, and creating a scene as always.
I felt a tap on my back and turned to my cousin who didn't stop tapping me because she was carried away looking at the crazy boys. Slapping her hand and getting her attention as she yanked her hand away and shot me a look, I raised my eyebrows at her.
Only God knew what she wanted now, after embarrassing me in front of Ituah yesterday and probably some onlookers that saw her bath me with her perfume.
"What do you want?" I asked her shaking my head at her. In this heat my cousin was still wearing a cardigan. Nawa for this girl o.
"What?" She looked at me and then at herself. "Nothing." I turned away from her to my seat partner Nk who was shouting Marlian and waving her hands in the air.
"I need water. " I heard my cousin say and reach into my bag without even getting my permission of whether I wanted her to take it or not.
In a few minutes, the biology teacher will be here. My cousin dropped my water back, bid me bye and went out. I breathed in and out, allowing air into my lungs. I was starting to feel better somehow.
Now... Biology. I braced myself for the one hour of torture. I really didn't like bio except when we reached an interesting topic like Reproduction, Hormones or the Central Nervous System.
My biology teacher walked in, her tall figure looming over us as she looked at the class trying to spot any trace of dirt. She hated dirt so much. Luckily she didn't find any and she also did not look like she was ready to teach this morning.
She looked tired and worn out, like she was just dragging herself which was unlike her. She was always the one that was bubbling with energy.
Never a time had she come to class in dull spirits, but today was unusual. She was quiet and somewhat sluggish.
Opening her book as the noise subsided, she said we were looking at a new topic and no one said anything or reminded her that she had not finished explaining the last one.
No offence but the last topic was boring it was on on pollination and floral parts of a flower, types of ovary and all. It wasn't boring if you understood it. But our biology teacher, Mrs Ogbonna couldn't teach that topic well.
As she began her lesson, my mind drifted away to Laura Williams my one and only senior sister who was going to be leaving for university in a couple of weeks.
I was going to be stuck with my ever annoying brothers. Not just Micheal but also the little one Mofe had joined him. So it was two against one. I let my thoughts take me up and away from class, school and everyone.
The day hadn't started well from the beginning so I really didn't expect much to go well, but what I didn't expect was for it to go this bad.
Coming back to earth, and my class I smiled at Mrs Ogbonna who was staring at me waiting for me to answer her question.
First of all, I didn't know the topic we were even treating, Secondly I didn't know the question she asked and lastly, my seat partner and probably the rest of the class were shaking their head at me.
What in the world was happening??? I stood up clearing my throat. "Ma?... Ma please sorry can you repeat the question?"
When the words were out of my mouth, all hell broke loose. It seemed like time stopped as the order was shouted.
Hands flew up in the air, my teacher braced up, the sleep in the eyes vanishing. I practically held my breath as he walked towards the front of the class.
I did not need to look back or be told who had arrived. It was the devil himself. But what I needed to be told was that, in a few seconds, I was going to experience pain.
