Inhuman

Chapter 2

I wake up to see Axel asleep in a chair, his head is turned to the edge nearly falling off the chair. The room was bland. The only thing that they had was lights set in the wall. This is the first time I've slept, I really slept in over a year, only I still feel the same, and I'm filled with the same sadness that I've had for years. I didn't dream though which is always good, for me at least. I see Catalya and Keanu walk in. Keanu has a better sling on his arm, I smile at them knowing that they are okay. I watch as Axel falls from the chairs, and he wakes up, everyone starts laughing. Catalya is trying to stifle his laugh, and Keanu just laughs, I laugh too. "Laugh it up Shorty '' Axel says looking at me, and we are still laughing.
  Catalya just shakes her head, we all laugh until someone walks in. They unfasten me from the sling, I look down at my leg and even though my leg was completely broken, it tools fine now. "Your leg is healed" Someone says that isn't a doctor or a nurse, "I'm sorry my name is Jones" he says, a cat-like smile spreads on his face, and already I don't trust him. I see Axel standing in a corner with his arms crossed, a frown is on his face, but not the type of frown where you're sad, more life the frown that you have when you are angry. Jones walks out of the door and we have to follow him. I hesitate for a second and so does Axel, but Keanu and Cateyla follow him, they are happy to get him out of that place. 
  Axel grabs my hand and we walk out of the room together. "You remember him too" I ask Axel, keeping my voice at a low whisper. Axel just nodded his head, fear was in his eyes, only it wasn't the same fear that I saw at the cliff. It was different. I could tell it was the fear of losing. "What do you remember?" I asked him. 
  Axel shakes his head and says "I'll tell you later" He keeps his voice low leaning down a little to whisper in my ear. Without being seen. Cataleya turns around, and Axel and I unravel our hands. She shakes her head with a smile.The hallway to rooms is dark and gloomy only but a few lights hang from the ceiling. This was and still is a hospital, only it looks way worse then it probably did twenty years ago. We then get to a part of the hospital that looks like the year it’s designed for, I look through a window and for a split second I see what I  think is a Crimson Head, but then one of the people looks at me, and I’m reminded of a fox with mischievous eyes, but there's also pity in them as he looks back at the Crimson Head. I notice Cataleya's eyes follow him, he doesn't seem to notice however. He takes a suring and a needle into the room, but before doing so he takes a deep breath. I don’t know if it’s fear or pity for the Crimson Head, but I know that he is working for Oxitec and he has to know what he is doing to everyone else outside the city. As we walk away from the window I hear shouting at the boy with the fox eyes and for once I realise from two words that the doctor says, I realize that this boy is or was one of us. When we stop we stop by two doors. 
 Jones looks at the four of us. “There’s clean clothes in both rooms, the room on the left is for the boys, and the room on the right is for the girls” Catalya looks at Jones suspicion bubbling inside her. Her blue eyes are now squinted as she looks at the Jones, she doesn't need to stand on her toes to look at him in the eyes, between her being tall and him being short they are really the same height.”We welcome the four of you with open arms” He says spreading his arms out and Catalya moves away, still with distrust in her eyes. Jones Unlocks the door and Catalya and I walk in, I look at Keanu and Axel before Jones shuts the door. The metal door slams shut and the room goes almost dark except for a little light on the top of the ceiling. 
Catayla looks down at her clothes. “This place is not our friend or even ally” She says picking up the clothes she debates whether to put them on or not, but instead she throws the clothes in the garbage can. She lays on the bed. I get changed into clean clothes not even thinking twice, I’m glad to be out of the clothes that I wore for my whole life, these clothes are white and so soft Catalya scoffs at me. Her scar shows more in the dark than in the light, shining almost like a burn.
I sit down in my bed which is across from hers and the room is not that big. “I never asked you how you got that scar”  asks her and she looks at her with fear in her eyes that quickly flashes away. 
She just shakes her head. “My past is mine and mine alone, you shouldn’t ask questions you won’t get the answer to” She says sitting up in her bed and looking at me. “Look I know  you came from here and every minute of every day I can’t stand the fact that you” But she was interrupted by the door opening. Almost immediately Catalya picks up her gun and stands up, It was the Fox Boy, and to add to his fow like look he even has red hair. 
He looks at the two of us and looks at Catalya a little longer because she was the one with the gun after all. “You shouldn’t be wearing those clothes” He says to Catalya, but he wasn’t talking to her he was talking to me. 
Catalya looks at him, her eyes almost squinted again. “And you shouldn’t be standing in front of the person with the gun” Catalya says, he doesn’t move away. 
He arches an Eyebrow. “Is the gun loaded?” He says and Catalya just looks at him with shock. He still stands in front of the gun not moving, even though the gun is pointed right at his head. 
Catalya just shrugged her shoulders. “ I don’t know, let's find out”. She says bitterly her finger is on the trigger ready to shoot, I can feel my heart rate quicken as I look back and forth from Catalya to the fox boy. 
He doesn’t move, but he says his name is. “My name is Sallow,Lucas Sallow”. 
Catalya lowered her gun, but the gun was still in her hand. “No your name is stupid,” She says looking at him and her finger lets go of the trigger. “So where are you originally from Sallow”. I hear Sallow exhale relieved that the gun is no longer pointed at him.
He stays standing in one spot. “I’m from one of the camps, and like you I escaped from the camp” He says.”This place is no place to be.” At this Catalya puts her gun back. “I know how to leave, but we need to wait till tonight” He says. Sallow looks at the gun that was in Catalya’s pocket. “You’re going to want to keep that on you, and you will need one to” he says.
Before Sallow leaves the room Catalya asked. “Why should we trust you,” She says her voice is still bitter. 
Sallow looks at her before even opening the door. “Don't,” He say, as he walks out of the room. I change back into my other clothes and Catalya packs a bag full of things we will need. 
After that we sit on our beds and watch as the hours tick by. “What were you going to say before?” I ask her. 
“What?” She says now she is confused. 
“What were you going to say before he walked in?” I asked her again and she just looked at me with pity in her eyes.
She shakes her head at me. “You really don’t remember do you” I just shake my head. “You and Axel were the reason I was down there” She says. I just shake my head. “I was never in the other helicopter” Catayla says and I look astounded. “I’ll tell you more when we get out of this hell hole” she says. “But for now can we just not talk about any of this” I nod my head and Catalya lays back on the bed. The hours tick by and I’m afraid to fall asleep. I listen to the clock on the wall, chime one, then two, then three, then finally Sallow comes back in, I wake up Catalya, and I notice right on her bed she has a knife next to her, not even on the table, but next to her, when I wake her up she grabs the knife I jump away, and she looks around the room and see’s Sallow and and I looking at her. Genuine fear is in her eyes, “What are the two of you looking at?” She says and we just ignore her. We go to the room next to us and see the two boys laying awake on their beds Keanu was throwing a ball up by the ceiling and Axel was tying a rope in a boat knot. “We're getting out of here,” Catalya says. 
Keanu jumps up from the bed and grabs his bag.”It’s about time” He doesn’t even Sallow he just wants to leave. Axel Jumps up from his bed, he was happy to be out of this place. 
Axel looks at Sallow, “Who’s he?” Axel says, grabbing a bag that was filled with weapons. 
“This is Sallow” Catalya says still with distrust in her voice, “If you have any questions feel free to ask” Catalya says, and Keanu and I both look at each other. 
When we walked out of the room Keanu asked “So when did she become the leader of this group” I didn;t answer him, I just kept walking because in all honesty I don’t even know. Sallow leads the way and we reach a door that looks like it hasn’t been open in days, Catalya and Axel keep a watchful eye on Sallow as he begins punching numbers on a screen. Keanu and I however are watching the halls making sure no one comes by. to stop our escape. Only no one comes and my suspicion arises. Maybe Sallow is leading us into a trap.
I walked over to Sallow now I was pointing a gun at him. “What are you really doing?” I asked him. He looks at me with an eyebrow raised as the door opens two armed guards look at the five of us. 
“You knew you were a trader from the start” one of the guards said. He points the gun at Sallow and the other one points the gun at me. 
Sallow raises his arms. “Fellas do I look like a trader to you” Axel looks at the guard with the gun pointed at me. 
The guard looks at him. “Let’s see you have four prisoners that you are trying to take out of the hospital. Yes I would say you are a trader” The guard says with anger and insult in his voice. 
I see Catalya walk really close next to Sallow and hand him something. “Oh wow I am, I am really hurt you say such a thing, we played cards together”. He said, but before they could respond, sallow shoots the gun at the guards; they both die instantly, a bullet to the brain. The alarm sounds and now we have to run one last door and one last code. One person comes running up. I aim the gun and shoot, but miss hitting their shoulder.It at least knocks them off guard. Ten more guards came up and we were outnumbered by five. 
Fear flashes in Catalya’s eyes “Sallow You better get us out of here” worry is in her voice. 
Sallow works frustratedly at the password trying to guess the password. “I’m working on it” He says through gritted teeth. Someone fires a gun at Axel and he ducks out of the way the bullet hits the computer screen for the password making the door open automatically. “Well that’s good luck” Sallow says, we run through the door and it closes behind us we hear the gunshots behind the door. Sallow keeps running until we finally reach a door that leads to the outside. The five of us close the door and we keep running. The cool night air fills my lungs and the stars shine in the sky,the moon was also bright reflecting off of puddles on the ground, it must have rained. We finally stop running when we get to a pile of dirt and shrubs. Sallow takes the dirt and shrubs off of a truck, and he gets in the driver's seat. The windows are broken from them breaking into the car to start it. Catalya looks at him then back at the car. The rest of us get in the truck and we speed away. 
Catalya holds onto the frame of the door gritting her teeth. “Do you not know how to drive?” She shouts over the wind of the speeding car. We hit a bump making the whole car jar to the side and for a second I think the car is going to flip. 
Sallow starts laughing a little. “I could learn to drive, but then what’s the fun in that”. At this Catalya looks even more scared her eyes widen and she stiffens her shoulders. “But don’t worry, I won’t crash into the lake that’s miles away. 
Now Catalya looks like she could jump out of the truck and walk the rest of the way. “Ha ha yeah very reassuring thanks” I say all of the sudden the car comes to a sudden stop and Sallow just smiles in the front seat of the car. 
His hair is sticking straight up on his head. "See that wasn't so bad was it." Sallow says we all hurry up to get out of the car. "The base should be right around here" he says seriously now. We walk only for at least fourteen blocks before we reach the base. 
"Remind me why we couldn't just drive the car to the base". Keanu says. He was carrying most of the weapons in a bag and was way behind us.
Before Sallow answers Catalya answers for him. "We can't lead Oxitec to the base". Sallow looks at her impressed she knows this. She looks around and starts leading the way. "You know Sallow I am the general" she says and all of us stop, Keanu looks the least shocked as if he already knew that.
Sallow looks almost star struck. "You mean to tell me you are general Lania?" he says almost gasping."General Lania, the one that one lead fifteen hundred rebel soldiers to successfully invade Oxitec". Catayla looks serious, but I knew she was trying not to smile. At the high praise she is receiving. "What happened to you?". At this Catalya stops being happy she keeps walking and ignores the question. When we walk into an old subway many people are sleeping on the floor with blankets and pillows, their shoes laying next to them, and like Catalya each of them had a knife on the side of their blanket. Thoughts that are awake however all stair at Catayla, each of them look as if they've seen a ghost. 
One person walks up to her. "General Lania your back" Catayla keeps walking, her poster never breaks. "After you were captured we went underground" The person says, in the dark I can't tell if this person is a man or a woman. Only until we went on a bus did I see what the person looks like. She has short brown hair that is cut in a boy cut. Sallow looks at Catalya, his arms crossed. " Did you get any more reports?" The lady asks Sallow. 
Sallow shakes his head. "No, not since last week." he says, his voice growing cold. "They tried more experiments on the Crimson head though". He says stopping. 
The lady looks at him. "And" she says and Sallow shakes his head. "Damn" she mutters under her breath. Turning away and looking at a bunch of pictures on the wall each of them have a red string on them and they are all doctors. That's a kill list, the lady looks at me, her eyes become angry. "Good you brought one of them here". She says I back away and she pins me to a wall, then I realize that one of the doctors on there is me. Fear courses through me she is going to kill me. Then another person looks at Axel, cornering him too. 
Catalya grabs both of their arms. “They can’t remember their past, they are just like us” She says and the two people lay off of us, I still don’t feel safe however, something about the lady makes me scared out of my mind. I must have done something in my life to hurt her. Sallow looks around the room and I can feel the tension in the room rise. 
Sallow grabs my arm, because I am still frozen in my spot, Keanu is frozen to, looking into the darkness beyond the flashlights. “Just like one of us, just like one of us” The lady repeats her voice nearly shaking with anger. “They flooded this place and if i’m not mistaken that’s the reason you are so afraid of water” The lady knows she hit something, I look at Catalya her fear was just beginning Sallow looks at her too and almost instantly Catalya punches the lady in the nose causing the lady to scream and blood starts gushing from her nose. 
Catalya shakes her hand as if it hurt her hand. “I’m back so if anyone has anyone has anything to say about these two they will have to answer to me” She says her voice goes across every waking person they all look at Catalya then at Axel and I, they all nod their heads. 
The lady stands back up, “You will never be brave enough to fight them, ever again” The lady says this and Catalya almost starts running, but Sallow already knows what is happening and grabs her arms pulling them behind her back. Catalya kicks her legs up screams, swearing the whole time, but Sallow was already out of the room. I can see Keanu snapped out of his gaze long enough to hear what the lady said, and he too tries to punch her, but I grab his shoulder and he looks at me. 
I shake my head at him. “Lets just leave” I say and Keanu nods his head, Axel follows out of the room and the lady grins.
The lady starts laughing a cold laugh that sends chills down my body and she shouts. “The two of you will never be good, you will always be the devil’s minions” As she says this I feel my heart break, what did she mean the devil’s minions. I can’t remember anything. We follow Sallow out of the base and back to the car. Catalya sits up front with Sallow and almost instantly falls asleep, Sallow drives slower now being careful not to wake her.
Keanu shakes his head at the ground and Axel looks at him. “You know what I hate” We both just look at him and he looks up from the ground. “I hate people that get in your head”
