I didn’t even make it halfway through my first day and I was already in the Principal’s office. The Principal, Mr Hunter, stared at me with his hands folded on his desk. Haidley was explaining what happened, not a mark or bruise on her.

“And Gracie here was like a ninja,” Haidley said and Mr Hunter raised an eyebrow. “Out of nowhere she just up and kicked him to the other side of the cafeteria, almost like she was ready for another jock to hurt someone else.”

“Is this true Gracie?” the Principal asked and I nodded, my eyes low and my red bangs covering my eyes.

“Yes sir,” I said. “Even though I wasn’t the one being threatened to a beating, I felt the need to protect my friends and that is what I did. I was taught never to fight someone who appears weaker than you.”

“You have been taught well then,” Mr Hunter said and I frowned, looking up.

“I’m sorry?”

“What do you mean?” Haidley asked and Mr Hunter stood up, walking towards the door.

“I know the way you’ve have been taught Grace,” he said and looked at me. “You are a smart girl, both of you are. I think we should forget this happened and move on. I’ll deal with Brendan.”

He opened the door and Haidley walked out, I followed. Brendan flinched away as I walked past him. Haidley led me to English and was both sat at the back. The teacher, an old woman who goes by the name of Ms Lisette, ignored us and continued with the lesson. Haidley turned to me and stared hard.

“Where did you learn to do that?” she asked.

“I use to take lessons but I recently stopped,” I twisted the truth slightly.

She dropped the subject and turned back to the board. I grabbed a pencil, opened my book to a blank page and stared drawing. By the end of the lesson, I had finished drawing another turtle and closed the book. I followed Haidley to P.E. It seems we have the exact same schedule. Thank god I put bike pants on underneath my short skirt.

“Now kids, today we will be playing dodgeball,” the teacher, Coach, shouted and I smiled, while everyone else flinched. “Two teams, even.”

The class of twenty six split and I went with Haidley. Coach ordered us on court and threw on eight balls, four boys from each team grabbing them. The girls lined up at the back and the boys at the front.

“Play ball!”

The boys belted the balls towards the girls, knocking them out one by one. I, on the other hand, ducked around, jumped over and side stepped away from every ball. One boy turned to me and pointed towards the back.

“Get me a ball!”

I glared at me and raced over, picking up one of the many balls and smirked. I turned around and with as much power as I could muster, I threw the ball at one of the boys on the other team. I grinned as he fell to the ground and grabbed two balls, tossing one to another boy. Eventually, it was just me against three boys. I looked at each of them and waited, ready to pounce. Two boys threw their balls my way and I jumped, narrowly missing them with the third ball flying towards my face. I reached out and grabbed the two balls and somersaulted as best I could over the last, tossing the two balls at the two boys flanking the third boy. I landed and regained my sense of balance before grabbing the last ball and hurtling it towards the last boy, followed by two more balls along the way. He just stood there and took all three powerful shots.

“Winner!” Coach called and my team cheered.

I smiled and turned to Haidley.

“That was incredible,” she gushed and I smiled.
