Chapter 9 > Short Story > Midnight Run
"I hate you!" I shout as my mom stormed away.
"Good, I guess were even now." She says with a smug on her face.
I guess my eyes give me away as her smile turns bigger.
"Oh you thought I really loved you? Oh wow, how stupid could you be? I never wanted to adopt you! I just wanted some money from your parents." She yells.
"Or should I say parent, since your drunk idiot of a dad wasted all his money on beer, then left when you came along. I guess he couldn't talk anymore mistakes he made in his life."
I can feel the tears prick my eyes as I realized the truth. All those moments that I thought we had a great relationship, or I thought she loved me was an act. She was just using me! And my dad, I know he left me but... but I couldn't be because he thought I was, a mistake? I cringed at the thought.
My foster mom continued, "Me and your real mom made a deal. I become your foster parent and she sends me money each month, but now that your real mothers dead those payments end. But guess what honey? She gave the rest of her money to you, and whats yours is mine." She chuckled quietly.
"She didn't want you!," she continued, " she said she couldn't take any more problems in her life, that she'll pay me for my kind heart." My foster mom smiled again.
It's not true, not true. Shes making it up.She's just playing with me.
"It was a mistake fostering you in the first place!" She screams.
I'm going to run away, and with my money. How dare she. She used me, and..and I believed her too. I fell right in the trap.
"I'm leaving" I whispered. I turned around and began to run upstairs as my mom, no that stranger downstairs, continued.
"Oh don't get too worked up hun, I already accessed your bank account. You have no money left. Its already transferred to my account. If you run away you have no place to go. I'ved covered my tracks and no police could help you now. Good luck on your own, you'll need it! She screamed.
I couldn't hold back my tears much longer. I bursted out crying, my sobs shaking my body as I went into my room. I threw myself on the bed and cried and cried. I didn't know what I was going to do. I had no money, I had no real mom. All I had was a monster. I hear footsteps in the background as Maratha, my foster mom walked upstairs.
I lean my head up on my elbows and try to quiet myself.
"I've changed my mind darling. I've decided I do want you here. You would be a nice little slave," she smiled wickedly.
"You cna't do that," I whispered, " slavery is against the law."
"Laws were meant for breaking." She smiled and slammed my door shut. Then I heard the twist of the lock. Oh shoot. No, no no. She didn't. Oh please let her have not locked me in.
I jumped off the bed and ran and twisted to the door knob. Yep definitely locked. I felt the tears rising in my eyes again. I walked slowly to my window, I didn't want Martha to hear any movement.
I opened up the window and looked at the window mesh. It looked easy enough to get through. I decided to cut it instead of just slam through. That would make too much noise.
I grabbed some scissors and began to cut a circle in the mesh. Finished. I stuck my head through the window and looked down. I wish I wasen't on the second floor, but my advantage was I was right over the deck.
I slowly pushed myself out and landed down on the deck with a thud. I needed to move fast now. If I headed behind my house I had enough time to go to my friend Rachel's house and maybe sleep over their. Her parents are always on business trips and her mom is a heavy sleeper.
