I woke up in a dark room that reeked of oil and mold. I looked around as my eyes adjusted to the darkness. I could see the outline of a few crates that sat in the box. When I tried to move I realized I was strapped to a chair.
"Someone help me!!!" I shouted.
I desperately tried to struggle out of the tight leather straps that bound my arms and legs to the uncomfortable metal chair. I closed my eyes and tried to remember anything I could. My name was Riana. That's all I could remember. Without warning the room lurched upwards and I realized I was in an elevator. I once again tried to escape the leather straps, but stopped short when I felt a sharp pain in my wrist. Something warm and wet slid onto my hand: blood.
"Someone get me out of here!!!" I yelled again.
After what seemed like forever the elevator came to a stop. The door on the ceiling opened up letting in the bright sunlight.
"It's a girl!"
"I got dibs!"
"Is she cute?"
As my eyes adjusted I realized I was being watched. Boys, about fifty or sixty of different heights, ages, and races surrounded the opening of the elevator. I tried my best to remain calm as one of the boys hopped into the elevator. He was tall, had windswept dirty blonde hair, warm brown eyes and looked to be about fifteen or sixteen. Panic finally took over. I desperately tried to back away which only made my wrists bleed more and the pain worse.
"Wait, stop!!! Your hurting yourself!" the boy half-shouted.
I stopped struggling and he cautiously walked closer. He pulled out a knife and started cutting the leather straps that bound my arms and legs.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He said helping me up out of the chair.
"I'm Newt by the way." He said.
A rope with a loop at the bottom was thrown into the box.
"Put your foot in the loop," Newt said handing me the rope.
I did as I was told and felt myself being lifted up out of the box. When the rope was at the top of the box I climbed over the edge onto the solid ground. I looked around at the boys who surrounded me. Some had blank faces that I couldn't read, some looked like they had just came back from war, and some looked like they wanted to kill me. Not exactly the type of welcome I expected. I looked back and saw Newt climbing out of the elevator I had arrived here from. A dark skinned boy approached me.
"The name's Alby and welcome to the Glade!" he said and held out his arms like he was presenting something that he had made. I looked around. We stood in a huge courtyard surrounded by four enormous stone walls that were hundreds of feet high. The walls were covered in thick ivy that had obviously been growing for a long time. The walls formed a perfect square and each side was split in the middle by a tall opening that led to winding corridors beyond.
"Come with me," Alby said.
I followed him over to a large shady tree where he sat cross legged on the ground. I sat down next to him and leaned my back against the trunk. After a few minutes Newt came up to us and sat down next to me. Millions of questions filled my head, but I knew better not to ask them even though my curiosity was killing me.
"Look, I know this is all very confusing-" Alby said but I cut him off. "Who are you and where am I?" I demanded angrily.
"Shut up Greenie!!! No questions asked until after the tour tomorrow. Got it?" he yelled.
I looked at Newt for help and he looked at Alby then back at me if telling me to say yes. I nodded.
"Now," Alby paused. "Newt, go find her a place to sleep and some food. We're gathering for a meeting tomorrow afternoon."
"Good that," Newt replied.
Alby started walking towards a crooked building. Newt stood up and grabbed my arm. I quickly pulled it away.
"So do you want something to eat or not?" Newt asked holding out his hand.
I took his hand and he helped me up. I followed him to the same building Alby had went to. Boys walking around the Glade looked at me. Some stared, some smiled, and some winked.
"It takes time to get used to. I know it's all confusing, but you will understand after the tour tomorrow." Newt said as he looked back at me. I was getting used to him; he wasn't like Alby or some of the other boys who looked at me like I had seven heads. He was actually nice to me.
"My name's Riana," I said.
"That's a nice name," Newt replied.
When we arrive at the wooden building he opened the door for me and I walked through.
"We call this the homestead. It's like a home to us. Some people sleep here, some sleep outside. This is also where we eat, and there's bathrooms in the back." Newt explained.
I sat down at a table and Newt came back with two sandwiches and two glasses of water.
"Why am I the only girl here?" I asked taking a bite from my sandwich.
"I don't know," he responded. "We're having a gathering tomorrow. See what's going on. Why the creators sent you here."
I hadn't even noticed but I had finished my sandwich.
"So you were hungry," Newt said. "Do you want another one?"
I nodded. He got up and came back with another sandwich. I ate it quickly and drank the rest of my water. When Newt was finished with his lunch he got up and I followed.
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't thank me, thank Frypan. He's the one who made them." Newt said. "You'll be sleeping in my room by the way because who knows what the Gladers would do to you if you slept alone."
As we walked I noticed that he had a backpack, fancy running shoes, and a wristwatch. I was confused as to why the other Gladers didn't have them. A boy with dirty blonde hair, green eyes, and freckles stopped next to me and gave me a look of longing and disgust. Newt stopped so suddenly that I almost ran into him.
"Keep moving," he ordered.
The boy glared at Newt and winked at me before departing from the homestead.
"What's up with him?" I asked.
"His name is Gally," Newt replied. "He hasn't been the same since he got stung."
I followed Newt up the stairs, down the hall, and into the last room on the left. It was a small room with a bed, a chest, and a window. He grabbed a pair of sweat pants and I turned around while he changed. I then realized that I didn't have any pajamas.
"Um do you have an extra pair of pajamas?" I asked.
"If you don't mind wearing mine then here," Newt said handing me a grey hoodie that was too big. I started to take off my clothes, but realized Newt was probably watching me; but when I turned around his back was too me.
What a gentleman, I thought. At least someone around here has manners.
I took of my Henley and jeans and slipped my arms into the sweatshirt and zipped it up. The sweatshirt barely covered my butt, but I told him to turn around anyway.
"Do you have any more pajama bottoms?" I asked.
"You look completely fine, Greenie," Newt laughed, his face slightly turning red.
I grabbed a sleeping bag that was in the corner of the room and spread it out on the floor.
"Don't sleep on the floor! It's filthy and bloody cold. Here," Newt said scooting over on the bed. "You can sleep here." He blushed, patting the place on the bed next to him.
I hesitated at first, but I knew I had nothing to worry about so I climbed in next to him. I turned around to face him when all of the sudden the room started to shake.
"What's happening?" I asked worriedly.
"The doors are closing," Newt replied. "They do that every night. You'll get used to it eventually."
"Wow, that's not weird at all." I said sarcastically.
Newt laughed. I laid down thinking about the maze until exhaustion overtook me and I fell asleep.
