When I woke up Newt was gone. I sat up and stretched and yelped when I felt an excruciating pain in my shoulder. I looked down at my shoulder and realized it was bandaged.
What happened yesterday? I wondered.
Newt walked in with two sandwiches in his hand.
“Morning,” He said handing me a sandwich. “How are you feeling?”
“My shoulder hurts,” I complained. “What happened anyway?”
The color drained from Newt’s face and he ran a hand through his hair nervously.
“You don’t remember?” He asked incredulously.
I shook my head, “No.”
“Ben stabbed you,” Newt said.
As soon as he said that the memory came back. Ben’s grotesque figure tackling me to the ground, Ben stabbing me, the arrow finding its home in Ben’s cheek. Suddenly I wasn’t hungry anymore. I had to resist the urge to throw up.
“I remember now,” I mumbled.
“I wish I would’ve been there to protect you.” Newt said a hint of sadness in his voice.
“It’s not your fault,” I said putting a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m sorry for being a jerk yesterday,” Newt said. “If you want to be a bloody runner then I should let you.”
“I know you were only protecting me,” I said. “Besides I don’t think I want to go back out into the maze.”
I had nothing to do so I helped Frypan prepare meals for the rest of the day. When I finished for the evening I ate a quick dinner and headed outside. All the Gladers were gathered around the north door and I heard an all too familiar bone chilling scream. I raced over to the north door and ran into Newt on the way.
“Newt, what’s happening?” I asked worriedly.
“Ben’s getting banished,” Newt responded.
We walked over to the north doors to get a better look. Ten Gladers stood on either side of the door holding spears that pointed inward; and twenty other Gladers faced the door and held poles with a wooden plank on the end. They looked like a broom but without the bristles. In the center of the Gladers stood a terrified Ben.
“Ben of the builders you’ve been sentenced to banishment for the attempted murder of Riana the only girl in the Glade. The Keepers have spoken, and their word ain’t changing; and you ain’t coming back. Ever.” Alby announced.
I stood there too surprised to move. Alby gave the Gladers a signal and those holding the poles began to move closer to Ben which forced him to move back, towards the maze.
“Please!!!!” Ben begged his voice rising in desperation. “Please!!!! Somebody help me!!! You can’t do this to me!!!”
“Shut up!!!!” Alby roared.
But Ben ignored him and continued pleading for help as he was forced closer and closer to the maze.
“Please!!!! I swear I’ll do anything! I swear I’ll never do it again! Please!!!!” Ben begged.
As if on cue the door began to shriek announcing that they were closing.
Alby and the other Gladers moved towards Ben who refused to budge. They shoved him into the path of the closing doors.
“Nooooooo!!!!” Ben screamed as the doors approached him.
Alby broke away from the Gladers and ran up to Ben, still holding the pole and pushed him out of the way of the doors and into the maze. Ben screamed, without pause, a bone-chilling scream. A bestial, lunatic cry that surely ripped the boy’s throat raw. At the last second Alby dashed back into the Glade, and Ben’s final screams were cut off when the walls closed with a terrible boom.
I got a horrible feeling in my stomach, as if this was all my fault. I squeezed my eyes shut and was surprised when I felt tears trickle down my cheeks.
