When I woke up it was early afternoon. Why didn’t Minho wake me up? I wondered. I looked over and realized Newt was gone. I sat thinking about my dream when Newt sat next to me and handed me a sandwich.

“Why didn’t Minho wake me up this morning?” I asked taking a bit of my sandwich.

“I didn’t trust Minho after what happened yesterday, so I told him that I couldn’t let you be a runner knowing that happened when you were in his care.” Newt explained.

“Newt!!” I exclaimed. “All I wanted to be was a runner and now you take that away from me?!?”

“I’m only protecting you!!” Newt yelled.

He took a deep breath and said, “I just don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“You can’t just go around telling me what I can and can’t do!!” I shouted. “If I want to be a runner I want to be able to without you inferring.”

I got up and walked into the deadheads to cool off. I sat down by I random tree and closed my eyes. All of the sudden I heard screaming coming from deep inside the deadheads. For some reason or another I started running towards the sound. I dodged trees and jumped over logs until I reached the graveyard, where the screaming was loudest. Several old wooden crosses stuck out of the thick sea of leafy weeds. I heard yelling again, this time it sounded as if it was coming from right behind me. I turned around and saw a Glader I had never seen before start to run towards me. I ran as fast as I could away to get away from him, but I was too slow. I tripped over an old log and when I tried to get up, the Glader tackled me back to the ground. He had enormous, bloodshot eyes, pale skin, and sickly green ropelike veins, and he held a knife in his hand. I punched and shoved my attacker but he was too strong. I was able to kick him a few times in the stomach but that only made him angrier. He stabbed me in the shoulder and I yelped in pain. When he was distracted I kicked him in the face sending him backwards. I got up and started to walk away when I heard someone shout, “Ben!!!”

I turned around and saw Alby holding a large bow with an arrow aimed straight at Ben’s face.

“Stop, right now!!!” Alby shouted earning a vicious glare from Ben.

“She’s not one of us!!” Ben yelled pointing at me. “I-I saw her. S-she’s bad. We have to kill her!!!”

I backed up slowly. At this point I was freaking out.

What happened to him? I thought.

“You leave that to me and the keepers, shuck-face,” Alby said. “Right now we need to get you to homestead.”

“Better we all jump off the cliff than have her alive.” Ben said his voice shaky.

“Ben, I’m going to count to three,” Alby said calmly.

“Bad. Bad. Bad. She’s bad,” Ben chanted switching his knife from one hand to the other while never taking his eyes off me.

“One,” Alby said.

I wanted to run, I wanted to hide, but I was too mesmerized, too scared.

“Two,” Alby said his voice filled with warning.

Ben started screaming and lunged towards me.

“Three!!!” Alby yelled as I watched an arrow pierce Ben’s cheek.

Ben fell to the ground. He made no sound, no movement. I walked over to a tree and vomited. My whole body shook. I couldn’t get that ghastly image of Ben out of my mind.

“C’mon, baggers will take care of him tomorrow,” Alby said.

I walked out of the graveyard, out of the deadheads, and towards the homestead. I felt my shoulder gingerly. My hand was covered in blood. Ben must’ve given me a deeper cut that I thought. I saw Newt walk out and limp towards me. Another image of Ben flashed through my mind: the arrow finding its home in his cheek. That was the last straw. I walked over to a tree and fell to me knees, puking everything last thing in my stomach. I felt Newt’s arms wrap around me and pick me up bridal-style. I fell in and out of consciousness, but I willed myself to stay awake. Newt carried me into the homestead, upstairs, and laid me on the bed. He grabbed a clean cloth, got it wet, and sat down next to me. He slipped my right arm out of my shirt to expose my injured shoulder. He began cleaning the wound, and I cried out in pain. He whispered to me as he cleaned it. When he finished bandaging it, he laid next to me, his warmth thawing my chilled bones. Eventually darkness surrounded me and I fell asleep.
