Over the next couple days I worked with a couple more keepers like Zart and Frypan. Cooking with Frypan was not as bad as I thought. It was actually pretty fun. He showed me how to make soup, spaghetti, mashed potatoes, roast beef, and a couple other meals. It was nothing like working with Zart. By the time I was finished working in the gardens I was exhausted. I actually fell asleep while I was working only to be woken up by Zart and told to get back to work.

Today I was standing next to Newt waiting for the newcomer to show up. Those ear-piercing alarms were driving me crazy. Newt told me that the alarms always went off when someone new came. A couple hours went by, but nothing happened. To my dismay the alarms didn’t stop blaring until sunset. Newt and some other Gladers opened the doors of the box. I looked down and saw a teenage boy about sixteen or seventeen who was tall and had brown hair and brown eyes. He looked terrified and his arm was in front of his face trying to block out the light. All at once the Gladers started shouting and asking questions.

“How old is he?”

“What does he look like?

“Hope you enjoyed the one way trip, Greenie.”

“Ain’t no ticket back bro.”

The poor boy looked like he was going to pass out from confusion and fear. I saw Newt throw a rope into the box and the boy put his foot in the loop at the bottom of the rope. While some of the Gladers were busy helping the Greenie out of the box I walked over to Newt.

“Looks like you’re not the Greenie anymore,” he said.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Alby, the Greenie, and a few other Gladers walk over to a tree and begin explaining things to the newbie.

“So while Alby explains things to the Greenie, do you want to get something to eat?” Newt asked.

“Sure,” I replied.

When we arrived at homestead Newt sat down at a table while I went to go get us sandwiches. I ate mine quickly, but Newt hadn’t finished his yet.

“Um, Riana,” he said hesitantly.

“Yeah?” I asked

“I have a question,” Newt said.

“Spill,” I said.

“How would you-” he asked but was cut off by an ear piercing scream coming from upstairs.

“What is that?” I asked worriedly.

“That’s Ben. He’s going through the bloody changing. Poor guy.” Newt replied.

“What’s the changing?” I asked.

“If you get stung and you get the grief serum, you go through the changing. It’s where you get your memories back. It’s a bloody painful process though. But if you get stung and don’t get the serum you’ll die.” Newt explained.

“Wow,” I said both disturbed and interested at the same time.

“C’mon it’s getting late.” Newt said before I could ask any more questions. “You have to meet up with another keeper tomorrow so you’ll need all the sleep you can get.”

Newt put his arm around my shoulder and we headed over to one of the trees in the deadheads. It’s a creepy place, but oddly enough I find it peaceful. I sat down and rested against the large trunk and Newt sat next to me. Sleep overtook me and for the first time I felt like everything would be okay.

“No you can’t do this!” I heard a familiar voice yell.

I immediately recognized the voice. It was Newt’s. I looked around to see that I was in a room that looked like a ware house with shelves full of supplies I’ve seen in the glade. I turned to see two men in white with guns shoving him into what looks like a very large metal cube. I realized it was the box.

“Stop!! Leave him alone!!” I yelled.

Two more guards came up to me and pulled me back. I tried to pull away from them, but their grip on my arms were too strong. I saw Newt struggling to get away from the guards like his life depended it.

“Leave her alone!!!” he yelled.

One guard took out a syringe that contained a mysterious red liquid and stuck it into Newt’s arm. Newt yelled out in pain. Suddenly he fell to the floor of the box. The guards let go of him and quickly closed the glass door behind them. Newt got up and pounded on the glass door. I could see the tears streaming down his face. I broke away from the guards and ran over to the glass door. When Newt saw me he calmed down and looked me in the eyes.

“Ree,” he said. “Please remember me.”

I woke up screaming. I felt someone grab my shoulders. Panic flooded through me. I started struggling to get away.

“Ree!!! It’s me!! It was just a dream!! It wasn’t real!!” Newt yelled.

I looked up at Newt and stopped screaming. I calmed down and gingerly touched my face. I felt fresh tears roll down my cheek and onto my fingers.

“It’s okay, you’re safe with me.” Newt said.

I looked around and realized it was still dark outside. I turned to look at Newt whose face was full of concern. He pulled me into a tight hug.

“You’re safe. I promise,” he whispered.

I buried my face into his neck.

“Riana, you were screaming like someone was trying to bloody kill you!! What happened?” Newt asked.

“I’ll tell you in the morning,” I said. “It’s all too confusing.”

Newt pulled away from the hug and looked me in the eyes.

“I promise.” I said.

Newt sighed and leaned back against the tree. I rested my head on his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around me.

“I just don’t want anything to happen to you.” He said.
