Someone shook me awake. I opened my eyes to see Newt’s face intently watching me. I opened my mouth to speak but he put his hand over my mouth. After he was sure I wouldn’t scream, he slowly removed his hand.

“It’s okay!! I just didn’t want you to wake up everyone else.” Newt said his tone slightly apologetic.

“C’mon I have to show you something,” Newt said. “Follow me.”

I quietly got up, put my jeans back on, and followed him. We went downstairs and departed from homestead. There were a lot of boys sleeping on the grass and Newt just stepped over them like it was nothing. I tried to keep up, but I tripped over someone’s leg and stepped on the next person’s foot.

“Sorry,” I whispered.

I continued following Newt until we reached one of the huge stone walls. Newt pulled away some of the vines to reveal a small window.

“Out there is the Maze. Our whole bloody life revolves around it. I’m here to show you why no one has ever survived a night in the maze, why you should never find yourself out there, why the walls close every night.” He explained.

I looked through the window and saw a huge, slug-like creature with spikes protruding from its slimy skin. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness I saw instrument tipped mechanical appendages that came out of its body like arms. It was the most horrifying thing I had seen in my life. The creature leaped at the window making me shriek and fall backwards but Newt caught me.

“Thanks,” I said. “What are those things anyway?”

“We call them Grievers. They always come out at night and thankfully we have these bloody walls to protect us. You’ve been sent here for a reason just like the rest of us. We expect you to survive and help us do what we’ve all been sent here to do.” Newt said.

“And what’s that?” I asked.

“To solve this bloody maze and find our way back home.” He responded. “Now, you need to have a tour if you’re going to know what goes on around here. You can choose who you want to show you around. The options are Alby, me-” I cut him off before he could finish the list.

“You,” I said.

“Great! Let’s get started.” He said.

We walked over to where I first arrived in Glade.

“We call this the box. We get a Greenie every month, and let’s just say they’re not usually not girls. Then every week we get supplies such as food, clothes, blankets, weapons, stuff like that.” Newt explained. “We don’t know anything about the box other than that it sent us here and there’s no way going back through it.”

Newt turned around and said, “The Glade is separated into four parts. The garden, homestead, blood house, and the deadheads.”

He faced me and pointed to the northeastern corner. “The garden is where we grow crops, and water is pumped through pipes underground. It has never rained, and it never will.”

Newt then pointed to the leaning tower of wood and windows. “Like I said before that the homestead and over there,” Newt said pointing to the southwestern corner. “We call that the deadheads. The graveyard is in the corner, where the woods get thicker. You can sit over there, relax, hang out, whatever.”

“In the next two weeks you will work different jobs with our keepers. At least until we know what you are good at. Bricknick, slopper, bagger, runner, track-hoe, something always sticks.”

We walked toward the southwest door between the blood house and the deadheads. Newt pointed to a red barn that had obviously been there for a while.

“That’s where the slicers work. If you like blood, you can be a slicer.” Newt said.

He then pointed towards the south doors. “Rule number one, never go out in the maze.”

“I don’t think I would want to go out there anyway.” I said. “What’s your job?”

“I’m a runner and second in command,” he replied. “But its hell out in the maze, let me tell you.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but Alby ran up to us and said, “Newt we’re starting the gathering, and I want the Greenie there too.”
