The next day Newt shook me awake. I groaned and pulled my blanket over my head only to have Newt pull it off.

“C’mon you have to meet up with one of the bloody keepers today, remember?” Newt said.

I groaned again. Newt sat at my feet and he picked up my ankles and dragged me towards him.

“C’mon sleepyhead,” Newt said.

Eventually, once i was fully awake i made the effort to stand. I staggered a little bit, but I caught myself. I followed Newt over to the blood house. I would not be looking forward to this. Winston walked out of the barn and approached us.

“Winston is the keeper here,” Newt said.

Winston held out his hand but I didn’t take it. At the gathering he wanted me locked up in the slammer. Now he wanted to be my friend? I don’t think so.

“Clint needs to check out my ankle. See if it’s getting better. I’ll see you later.” Newt said and he limped back to homestead.

Winston showed me around the first hour. He explained which pens were for which animals, stuff like that. A cute black lab named Bark walked beside me for the entire tour. Winston said he was always here and no one knows where he came from. For the second hour I worked with the farm animals. Feeding, cleaning, fixing the fences, and scraping up klunk. For the third hour I had to watch Winston slaughter a pig and begin preparing its parts for future use. I watched in utter disgust; even Bark ran outside. Later that day I found a tree in the deadheads on the edge of the forest. I sat down and leaned against its trunk. I sighed wishing I didn’t have to go back to working with Winston. I closed my eyes and just relaxed as I sat by the tree.

“Hey!!” I heard a familiar voice yell. I turned and saw that it was just Chuck. “Newt wanted me to check up on you-” he said but I cut him off.

“Well, tell him that I’m fine,” I said slightly irritated.

With that Chuck ran off in the direction of the homestead.

At sunset I sat by the box waiting for Newt. I wondered why he asked Chuck to check up on me. This wasn’t the first time he had done this though. Out of the corner of my eye saw a silhouette limp closer and closer. This startled me and almost made me fall backwards. Turns out it was just Newt

“We need to get you a bell!!” I said jokingly.

Newt just shrugged.

“So we’re getting a new Greenie in a few more days?” I asked.

“Yep, but since you’re the first girl, we don’t know what gender the new Greenie is going to be.” Newt responded.

“I wonder how we can get out of here,” I said.

“We’ll figure it out eventually,” Newt said his voice hopeful.

“So how was the blood house?” Newt asked changing the subject.

I groaned remembering Winston’s hands, arms, and clothes drenched in pig blood.

“That bad for, huh?” Newt asked laughing.

I have to admit I loved spending time with Newt. He was the only one who actually listened to me. When I was with him I felt safe and loved. I looked up at the sky. The once bright blue sky was now different shades of oranges, pinks, and purples. Newt and I walked over to a tree at the edge of the deadheads and sat down. All of the sudden exhaustion hit me like a wave. I wanted to stay up with Newt and just talk, but sleep won and I was sent into the dark abyss.
