Evan Hansen stood in front of the school. It was his senior year, and he didn't like it so far. Why? People. And talking. And socializing.

He knew he should go inside, but what if people were going to laugh at him, or make fun of him, or - no. Don't think like that. You'll be fine. People probably won't even notice you.

They will if I do something stupid.

You won't. Just go inside.

Evan sighed. He was getting tired of this conversation in his head every day. He didn't even know why he was so anxious, he always made sure to be early at school so there barely were any people. Evan took a few shaky breaths and walked inside.

As he'd expected, there only were a few people putting stuff in their lockers and talking with their friends. It was pretty quiet, and Evan liked the silence. That was also a reason why he came this early to school.

Evan walked to his locker and put stuff he wouldn't need the few hours in it, then went to his first class that day. History. Evan didn't really hate history, it could be interesting sometimes and the teacher was nice. And Jared would be there. He didn't know if he liked that though: sure, Jared was his only friend, but he didn't really look forward to his reaction when he saw Evan's new cast. He'd got the cast this Saturday, when he fell out of a tree.

Well, he didn't really fall.

He let go.

But no one needed to know that, and no one was going to know it.

Since the teacher hadn't arrived yet (not only because Evan was so early, but also because the teacher usually was pretty late) he couldn't go into the classroom, so Evan sat down against the wall, grabbed his phone and earbuds and played some Disney music.

He was quietly humming When I Am Older when he felt someone's presence. Evan stood up a little too quickly which caused him to accidentally drop his bag. Lucky for him it was closed, so he grabbed it and faced a grinning Jared. "Heeeeyyyyy Evannnnn," he greeted him. "H-Hi," Evan stuttered. "How are you?" Jared asked glancing at the cast. "I'm great, thanks," Evan said sarcastically. Jared once again eyed the cast. "How'd that happen?"

"F-fell out of a tree," Evan answered quietly. He knew Jared probably wasn't going to believe him, but he only laughed. "Fell out of a tree? What are you, an acorn?" Evan looked down and blushed embarrassedly. "Just kidding," Jared laughed and he lightly pushed Evan's good side. The conversation didn't continue because of a boy with black pants, a grey jacket and a black T-shirt passing them. Evan knew that boy. Of course he did. Jared had been joking about how he would be the school shooter often enough.

"Hey Connor, love the new hair!" Jared said loudly. "Very school shooter chic!" Connor stopped abruptly and looked Jared dead in the eyes. "Shut up," he said narrowing his eyes. He was going to walk past them, but he heard Jared mumble "whatever, freak." Evan chuckled nervously. "What are you laughing at?" Connor questioned. "N-nothing, I'm, I'm sorry-" Evan never finished the rant that was going to come. Connor roughly shoved him against the wall and went to his class.

Evan felt like he was going to pass out. Somehow, he managed not to pass out with the breathing techniques his mom had taught him. Jared awkwardly stood next to him and patted his back. "You okay?" he asked. "Yeah, I'm f-fine," Evan said, still breathing harshly. Jared observed Evan for a moment, then shrugged and said "great." Evan followed him inside and sat down at his usual spot next to Jared. He listened to the teacher and waited for the bell to ring.

Meanwhile, Connor was in his English class. And he was very, very bored. He didn't even remember why he hadn't just ditched this class. Probably because the school would send his parents a letter if he did, and then they were going to be mad at him. The only reason Connor willingly went to school was because of his friend Lydia. She was a junior, and she'd moved to the town this summer. Since they both didn't have any friends before they met, Connor once decided to go sit next to the alone new girl during lunch break. They soon had a friendly conversation and they'd been friends for months now.

They never met after school though; Lydia said her stepmom would freak out if she discovered Lydia had made a friend and Connor's parents were probably going to think he'd blackmailed Lydia, or something. And even if they believed they were real friends, Zoe was just going to tease him about his "girlfriend". Connor didn't even like girls, for god's sake! And Lydia was ace, so even if he did like Lydia he wouldn't have the slightest chance with her.

He wondered how Lydia would react when he told her what happened before class. She'd probably tell him to apologize to Evan, and he knew she was right. He felt really guilty about it. The kid had a cast, he was injured! And yet he'd shoved him pretty hard. He'd just lost his temper, and this is what happens when Connor Murphy loses his temper.

The bell rang. Finally. Connor decided to skip until lunch break, he didn't really care about that letter to his parents. They probably couldn't be any more disappointed in him than they already were. He went to his favourite place behind the school and started playing a game on his phone.

"You should apologize to him," Lydia told Connor.

"I know."

"Then why don't you?"

"Because he probably doesn't want to see me, or talk to me," Connor sighed. Lydia rolled her eyes and walked over to Evan. He sat only a few tables from theirs. The boy who had been talking to Evan this morning wasn't there, Lydia guessed he was with his other friends.

"Hi," she said with a kind smile. Evan looked up from his food. "H-hi," he said startled. Someone was talking to him! "Evan, right?" Lydia asked him. "Yeah, Evan." He mentally cursed himself for this. "I'm sorry," he added quickly. Lydia tilted her head confusedly. "Why are you sorry?" "Because you said Evan, and then I said Evan, and it's just so annoying when people do that, and - that doesn't make any sense, I'm sorry," he rambled. Connor was watching the conversation and raised an eyebrow. The broken arm was apparently not Evan's only problem. Should he worry about it? Nah, not his problem.

"You apologize a lot," Lydia chuckled. "I'm sorry, I mean, you know what I mean..." Evan stared at the table. Lydia sat down and held out her hand. "I'm Lydia," she said. Evan shook her hand after wiping his sweaty hand on his jeans. "Hi," he said weakly.

"Hey, sorry about my friend, I saw him push you this morning?" Lydia said. "He knows he should apologize, but he doesn't think you want him to talk to you." She rolled her eyes. "Oh, no, it's fine," he insisted quickly. Lydia raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? You seemed pretty panicked afterwards." "Yeah, I'm, I'm sure." Lydia didn't really believe him, but decided to drop the subject. "Do you want to sit at our table?" she offered. "Um, okay," Evan replied hesitantly.

When Evan sat down there was an awkward silence. "H-hi," he said to Connor looking in his eyes. Connor was pretty impressed by that, Evan obviously wasn't really good at talking to people and he knew it probably was hard for him to look in someone's eyes. "Hi, and, sorry about, y'know, this morning," Connor said very softly. "It's okay," Evan responded and he smiled a genuine smile. Connor gave him a little smile back. It made Evan feel comfortable. He felt like these people might become his friends.

"Why has no one signed your cast?" Connor asked after another awkward silence. "Oh, I don't really have anyone to sign it," Evan mumbled. "I'll sign it," Connor said decidedly. Evan looked up at him excitedly. "Really?" "Yeah," Connor chuckled. "D'you have a sharpie?" Evan nodded and pulled out a sharpie. Connor wrote his name in big letters on the cast. CONNOR.

"Hey, leave some space for me!" Lydia said smiling. "I still want to sign it." Evan was beaming. They really could become his friends. Connor handed Lydia the sharpie and she wrote "and Lydia" under Connor's name in a smaller but neater handwriting.
