"She knows."

"Who knows what?"

Lydia and Connor were cycling to school. It took them about twenty minutes to get there, so they had plenty of time to discuss life and other stuff while they went to school.

"My stepmom. She knows I have friends."

Connor gasped dramatically. "Oh my god, Lydia, you have friends?"

"Yeah, that's pretty much her reaction," Lydia sighed, rolling her eyes. "Oh, and I also told her and my dad I'm ace."

Connor smiled widely with pride. "Lydia, that's amazing! How did they react?"

"Delia was way too excited and happy, and dad just gave me this awkward I'm-sorry-for-my-wife-but-I'll-be-proud-of-you-for-foreversmile." Connor smiled sadly. "Sometimes I wish I had your parents."

"Really? Delia is just too much, and you don't wanna know how dad's been acting since mom d-died."

"Still. You know how my family is, they're definitely worse." Lydia nodded. She felt sorry for Connor, his family was terrible. She'd met his sister a few times at school and she seemed nice, but whenever she and Connor were talking they were fighting and it made Lydia sad.

It used to make Connor sad as well; he hated arguing with her, or with anyone. But he'd gotten used to it. Somehow, he always caused trouble and fights and he accepted it. There were only a few people he could talk to without anyone getting hurt, and he was thankful for them. He hoped Evan could be one of those people. Though he'd pushed Evan literally the moment they met, it seemed like Evan forgave him, right? He wasn't sure. There just was a voice in his head that said Evan was never going to forgive him for it. He'd tried to shut the voice out so many times, but he couldn't. It made him feel hopeless.

"Connor?" Lydia asked softly. "Are you okay?"

"What? Um, I'm, yeah, I'm fine." Connor smiled wryly at her. He knew she wasn't going to believe him, but he also knew she wasn't going to make him talk about it and he appreciated that. Even though he said he was okay, he knew that once the negative thoughts started, they'd be there for the rest of the day. Awesome.

They arrived at school and their ways parted. Connor went to his locker and passed a certain dirty blond boy who was struggling with his books.

Books.

It's hard not to struggle with them. They're heavy.

Except if they're on your phone.

"Hi!" he said with a small smile. He still felt bad, but seeing a friend - a friEND - made him feel a little better. Evan gave him a dorky smile, accidentally dropping a few books. Connor took them for him and gave them to Evan. "T-thanks," Evan said and his dorky smile came back.

"So, which class do you have?" Connor asked. "French with J-Jared."

"Good luck with Kleinman. I have PE, but I think I'm gonna skip it."

"O-oh. Well, see you in history," Evan said. He gave Connor a little wave before heading to French. Connor waved back at him. Then he realized Evan had said "see you in history".

Evan knew they had history together.

Evan had noticed him.

Evan sat down on his usual seat next to Jared. Jared hadn't arrived yet, but Evan guessed he'd come soon.

Jared was unusually nice yesterday. Evan knew he could be like that, but it was rare and it wouldn't happen again for at least a month. He'd never offered someone one of his precious bathbombs before though. That was very, very rare.
