Rain was pouring heavily. The wind was blowing furiously on a Friday morning. Unsuspecting students of Geurim High were walking to school with an extra joy in their step despite the gloomy weather. This was because it was the last day of school for the students before they were off for their 3-week semester break.
Ji Mia however, was tugging her hoodie closer to her body and staring at the puddles on the floor as she walked. Her earphones were blasting some Khalid. She did not bother to look up at all. She did not feel particularly excited as everyone else. She just felt the dread of being one day closer to her final exams despite it being many months away.
When she reached the entrance of her school, she stopped. Other students just went around her while she just stood there. Mia considered just turning around and running back to the comfort and safety of her room. It took all of her will to not do so. Instead, with a heavy heart, she took a step into school.
She unplugged her earphones and tucked it away in her bag. Zipping up her hoodie all the way till her neck, she dragged herself to class.
Voices of excited chatter blended well with the thumping of fat rain drops against the glass windows and the metal rooftops of the school. Her shoes were slightly wet from the deep puddles outside. So was her bag but she just shrugged it off. Finally reaching her classroom, she sat at her seat and put down her things.
She checked her books to see if they were drenched.
Good thing my folders are waterproof.
On any other day, Mia would have been a little more enthusiastic like the rest of her peers. However she only had 4 hours of sleep that night because she stayed up doing homework. It did not help that she had a nightmare that disrupted her sleep. Mia woke up in cold sweat. Her heart was thumping furiously against her chest. After tossing and turning for another half an hour, she finally fell asleep but not for long as her alarm rang, signalling her to get ready for school.
She was hoping to take a quick nap at her table before lessons started. The cold weather didn't help her stay awake at all. She was about to put her head on the table when-
"Mia!"
Dammit.
Immediately, Mia sat up. Her mouth curved into a huge smile. She forced herself to look more alive and awake.
"Are you excited for semester break to start? We can finally rest for awhile. I don't remember the last time I had a good sleep! Let's just hope that the teachers will be kind enough to give us little homework," my friend, Leah said as she sat at the desk in front of me.
"I don't think Ms Lee would be so kind to us though. Seeing how badly we did for our class test last week, she won't ever consider lessening our load," my other friend Ah Ra said as she sat on my desk.
I sighed, " Girls I think all we can do is hope that our break will actually be a break and not an excuse to give us more work to do."
The bell rang, interrupting their conversation. Everyone dispersed back to their assigned seats. Mia rubbed her eyes and took a sip of water in hopes that she will be able to get through the day without falling asleep.
First period. Math.
Ms Lee walked in with two other students following behind her. They were each carrying fresh stacks of worksheets. Everyone groaned in unison.
"Alright class. These are your holiday homework."
