December 2nd

I ended up keeping the egg sabotage to our house a secret from my mother, knowing it would only have stressed her out more than she already is. A single mom taking care of three children, and with two in college? Not to mention my brother just turned thirteen, Christmas is almost here, and then my sister turns soon after. I try my hardest not to stress her out more, but my siblings still give her a run for her money.

Walking into my backyard, I sucked on my teeth when I saw the broken pieces of the birdhouse my sister had made a few years back that was hanging on the tree. If that wasn't enough, the name spray-painted on our fence was a dead giveaway. It seems they were a bit drunk.

"Crap. Mother's going to flip," I mumbled to myself, pulling my scarf up over my nose as I picked up the splintered pieces of wood. Sighing, I went over and threw it into the recyclables, turning back around to see a small, black beanie lying in the snow. I walked over and picked it up, dusting off the thin layer of frost. Sighing, I ran my gloved finger over the black fabric as I bit my cheeks.

I remember seeing him every day with this hat. He never really took it off. Which made the teachers' head spin, but he never paid attention to it. The kid wasn't exactly the most pleasant person to be around. He was about as frightening as a dog that lost its mind completely, mostly running on anger and adrenaline. Most girls talk about his sex appeal, but his passive facial expressions and eyes that could melt diamonds were something I could never get past.

Why was this guy even here last night, and why my house? Why eggs?

"Why me of all people?" I asked myself, shaking my head and shoving the beanie in my pocket. It probably had nothing to do with me, but I would need that for Monday.

"Hey, Kendall! Do you wanna build a snowman!?" My sister sang, running out the door after my brother, whom of which was covering his ears.

"Kendall, make it stop! She hasn't stopped singing since she saw the snow!" My brother whined, picking up a handful of the white frost and throwing it at her, hitting her in the stomach. I laughed when she gasped dramatically at him.

"Benjamin! Jacklynn! Play nice!" My mother called from the back door, immediately stopping them both in their tracks. They slumped their shoulders, both dropping their heads. I chuckled, walking onto the back porch.

"Try and behave for momma while I'm not here. I'm pretty sure it would be quite embarrassing to get a butt whooping at your ages, don't you think?" I asked, shoving my hands in my pockets as I turned around. They both exchanged worried glances, making me chuckle. It was no lie. My mother was the type of woman that didn't act lightly on her threats. If she said she was going to do something, you best believe she's going through with it.

"Jackie, try not to hurt Benji too hard, will you?" I asked, turning around and walking inside. I chuckled when I heard Benji whine as Jackie laughed.

"Whose side are you on?!" He yelled after me, making me chuckle — my own.

"Bye, Momma, I'm going to meet up with Amanda and Geni. When do you want me home?" I asked, kissing her on the cheek. She smiled and handed me a twenty, cutting me off before I could protest.

"I want you home by nine-thirty, ten at the latest unless you end up sleeping over Geni's. Now don't complain about the money, I've been saving it for you. Are your brother and sister behaving?" She said, skillfully evading my protests. I heaved a defeated sigh. I nodded, kissing her on her cheek once more before shuffling out the door.
