I awake with my head pounding, I try sitting up slowly but a churning in my stomach has me leaping from my bed and into the bathroom.
I knew going out drinking was a bad idea, but I really needed the distraction. It was the anniversary of my cousin's disappearance, Aerith. It's been a few years since it happened, nobody knew what happened to her or why and it tore me apart.
I looked up to her, for guidance and comfort, she was and still is my role model. We used to spend every waking moment together growing up, before she left home to do what she loved.
I think of her everyday and I know she would be disappointed in me if she saw me drowning in my sorrow instead of reminiscing in the memories we made together.
I get up and lean on the sink, rinsing the leftover bile from my mouth. I do my normal bathroom routine, rinsing my mouth out with a couple extra cups of mouthwash to get the acidic taste out. I go back to my room and flop on my bed, grabbing my phone from the nightstand and checking the time.
15 minutes before my alarm rings, I decide on going over my mental checklist. I have half an hour to get dressed, 20 minutes to get to the building where I start my first day, and then 10 minutes of awkwardly waiting in the lobby 'cause I got there too early.
'Sounds like a plan.'
I get off my bed and take an Advil, doing a bit of yoga until my alarm rings. Once it does I get ready, putting on the professional attire I was told to wear. Being in a suit feels weird, it's not really my style nor what I'm used to wearing.
I look in the mirror to check how I look. It surprisingly looks good on me, thank Gaia, I don't want to look like an idiot. I fix up my hair a bit before glancing at my watch, the face reads 7:25 so I figure I should start walking to the bus stop. I grab my wallet, keys and phone before leaving my apartment.
As I'm leaving through the lobby, I pass one of my neighbors who is coming back from walking her dog. She sees me and gives me a bright smile.
"Good luck on your first day!" I smile and shoot her a quick thanks, continuing on my journey for the bus stop.
Minutes seem to pass by before my bus arrives. Getting on and paying the fare with a prepaid card, I choose a seat closest to the rear doors.
With my apartment being so far from the corporate building, it's not until 15 minutes have passed until I arrive at my stop. I get off and head in the direction of the very tall Shinra Electric Power Company building.
I get there in five minutes flat before calming my nerves and going inside. I head to the front desk where a pretty woman is sitting, her brown hair pulled back into a tight bun, not a strand out of place..
"How may I help you? Do you have an appointment?" She sounds sweet which makes my nerves settle down. I give her my name with a nervous smile
"I s-start working here today."
She types my name into the computer, her eyes skimming over the screen before looking back at me.
"You're a little early so you can wait over there while I call for someone to show you where you'll be working." She points to a waiting area, my eyes follow her finger.
I give her a nod and thanks, heaving over to the cluster of chairs and taking a seat, awaiting to be shown where I will work. When I received the call about my application a few days ago, I was expecting some mediocre desk job, sitting in a cubical all day.
Imagine my shock upon hearing that I am now an executive assistant for one of the most influential people in this building.
