~ Lydia POV ~
"Lydia, you just go to school. You can't keep putting it off forever. You know what my guru Otho said: 'school is like yoga: nobody likes it, but you never get rid of it.'" Delia tells me. My father stands next to her. "Your mom is right... I guess?" he says.
I turn my back to my father and Delia. "She's not my mother."
I'm going to the attic. I should be going to school in a few minutes, but I'm really not looking forward to that now.
Adam and Barbara come to me. Barbara is holding my coat and Adam is holding my bag.
"Come on, Lydia. You can do it." Barbara says. She puts my coat on me. "There are books there?" Adam says. He gives my bag.
"Yeah..." I say. I walk out of the house.
I never really had a good relationship with my father and Delia. My mom, Emily, was always the one who was there for me. Only now she's there... I'm looking at the sky. Barbara and Adam are my ghost-parents.
When I arrive at school I look up at the building. It is big. I moved here after my father wanted to work together with someone. That means I don't know everything here yet.
A week ago it was chaos: I had summoned a demon. It was fun until he tried to kill Barbara. I love my ghost-parents so much.
I check on my phone which lesson I should have first. Dutch. I sigh. I've never been good at languages- wait, since when do we have Dutch?
I shrug my shoulders and walk into the classroom. There is literally no one I know. I walk to an chair in the back of the class.
"Goedemorgen, klas. Welkom bij jullie eerste Nederlands les. Zijn er vragen?" the teacher begins.
It remains silent. No one knows what the teacher says. Suddenly everyone starts talking to each other. A boy in front of me with a red tuft in his hair throws paper at the teacher and a boy next to him laughs.
And there I am. In the back of the class. On my first day of school. I wish I had stayed home.
