Nate tapped his foot nervously against the hardwood floor of their shared apartment. Matt should have been home an hour ago. He was never late, same time everyday for a year, and Nate was starting to get nervous. The room was dark, not too dark but enough to calm nate a little bit.
7, 7:30, 8, 8:3-
"Honey? I'm home!" Matt rejoices as he walked through the door as if nothing happened.
"Where have you been? I've been worried sick, you didn't answer your phone. I thought you were dead." Nate shouts, tears rolling down his face.
"Baby, listen I had to run a few errands that's all."
"You could have told me where you were going! I was so scared that I wouldn't see you again, do you know what that's like?" Nate grunted storming off into their bedroom.
Matt put his head in his hands against the counter, a feeling of guilt looming in his stomach. Nate has never lashed out like this, at least to Matt. He must have been really worried. Matt had left his phone in the office and knew he should have gone back to go get it, but he was too excited about Nate's birthday surprise.
Matt knew how to make this right.
Nate sat on their bed, hastily wiping the tears that flowed down his cheeks away. He knew he shouldn't have lashed out at Matt, he was just scared about being left again. He was probably just working late. Still, a little warning would have been nice and on his birthday no less. Nate's not one to like his birthday but he at least wanted his boyfriend around to cuddle up to and watch movies with.
Nate wipes away his last sniffle before he heard the blasting music coming from the other room. Not just any music, his favourite song. Nate carefully left their room, only to see Matt standing in the middle of the living room, standing next to their record player. The spinning vinyl played a love like war by all time low. Matt carefully held out his hand for Nate to take, which he did. Matt put a hand on Nate's waist and held his hand in his other. Nate's hand found Matt's shoulder as they slowly danced to the beat of the song, laughing as they attempted spins and moves they knew wouldn't end up well. By the time the song ended they were both laughing messes on the couch.
"I'm sorry I was late tonight baby, I was just trying to pick something up for you." Matt kisses his head, that now lay against Matt's chest.
"I'm sorry I lashed out, I was just scared and relieved and slightly mad and I just, I'm sorry." Nate sighed.
"My phone is still at the office or I would've texted you I just wanted to give you this." Matt reached into his pocket to pull out a black box. Inside was a simple black ring with purple gems. "I love you Nate, will you please be my husband?"
"Of course!"
