Once they were back in the car, Meredith really didn't want to lose the momentum of what they'd started in History class. "So," she started.

"So?" Halle said rolling her eyes as she backed out of her parking space.

"You and Wilson, huh?"

"Ugh, don't start," Halle told her cautiously.

"Okay, okay. He's cute. You're cute, so, why not?"

"Why?"

"Why not?"

"I'm not playing that game with you today," Halle told her.

Back when they were kids, whenever they wanted to see who would break first they would go back and forth asking why and why not until they either laughed so hard they cried or until the other one caved. Halle laughed to herself as she tried to be patient with after school traffic.

Fortunately, the high school kids got out before the elementary school kids but there were school zone signs for every elementary school she passed and she passed two on her way home.

She pulled into her spot in the three-car garage and turned off the ignition. "Today wasn't so bad Mare. I'm sorry about biting your head off in music."

"I'm sorry too," Meredith told her. She had to look away so that Halle wouldn't see the tears welling up in her eyes. Maybe, just maybe, she'd get her friend back with this project.

"I'll see you tomorrow," Meredith told her then shot out of the car because she'd seen her mother opening the back door.
