So this is why Cole hadn't responded to her text to regroup before the meeting. He was planning on going against the plan all along! At this point Cole beginning to look like he was the one doing all the work, and Kat was just dead weight. She was infuriated by his behavior. She wanted to go up to the two and stop him, but at this point it wouldn't matter. How could he do this? If this what Cole was like on all of his other missions, it was no big surprise that he had been forced to work with a rookie.
Layla tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey, are you okay?" Kat was bad at making sure her face didn't give away how she was feeling, and Layla had noticed.
"Yep." Kat said through gritted teeth. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down. "It wasn't a big deal, I'll just talk to him about that later and try to figure out what the hell he was thinking." she told herself. "When do you think this is gonna be over by?"
"I don't know, but I thought you were looking forward to this?" Layla asked. She was right, Kat had been waiting all day for this, but it wasn't at all like what she had been imagining.
"You're right, I was, but it's not what I expected." Kat shrugged. Cole and The Deep were still talking, and Cole pulled out one of those trading cards that Vought had tried to sell a year or two ago and a sharpie. The Deep smiled for the first time during the whole meeting and scribbled his signature on it. His agent had stopped discussing business with Mrs. and Dr. Lawson and shook their hands. After that, both of them left. Everyone waited in silence for Mrs. Lawson to tell the room what had been decided.
"What's the verdict?" Asked a tall man wearing glasses. He was also wearing the aquarium's uniform shirt but khaki shorts instead. Layla later told her that his name was Elliot, and he had the same job as they did. He was a pre law major at one of the colleges nearby. Kat was pretty sure that he didn't have any personality besides constantly mentioning his future career.
Kat saw the woman smile slowly as she turned around. "We got him." She said smugly. Everyone in the room cheered as Dr. Lawson high-fived his wife. Mrs. Lawson waved her hand, signaling everyone to be quiet. "He'll do commercials as long as they are run by his manager and Vought, he can do tours with the aquarium when his schedule is clear, and we could even have a meet and greet here."
Reese, another one of Kat's coworkers who actually bothered to show up, looked on in disdain. She was the only other person in the room who regularly kept up with the The Seven, and she constantly kept telling anyone who would listen why they should've brought Starlight instead. She was rather immature for someone of her age, but Kat still liked Reese.
"Well, that just about wraps everything up!" Mrs. Lawson said, ushering everyone out of the room. As everyone walked out, Layla stopped everyone right before they went to go home.
"We should all go out for drinks later!" Layla said. "As a celebration." Kat agreed with her, and Elliot and Reese agreed to come with. Cole attempted to join in as well, but because he was underage, Kat told him he had to stay home.
Once Kat and Cole entered her car, she turned towards him. "What were you thinking? How could you? Do you understand how you could've put this whole thing at risk?"
"I really was a fan of his. Back when I was younger." Cole said quietly. "I wasn't putting anything at risk. I know what I'm doing, you're the rookie. Don't forget that." Kat was stunned, and didn't say anything else. She drove them both back to the apartment, and Cole stayed in his room for the rest of the night. Kat wanted to go in and apologize, but she knew that reckless changes to the plan would get them both in hot water one day.
Kat changed out of the uniform and into more casual clothes for the bar she was supposed to go to. It was one the locals favored over any others, called the Memorable Tavern. A strange name for sure, but Layla swore by the cocktails and fries were the best around. Kat left a note out telling Cole where she was going, not that he'd leave his room during the time she was gone.
When she arrived at the bar, she saw Layla already there, motioning her over to a table she was sitting at. Shortly after, Reese and Elliot arrived. "Now its a party!" Layla cheered, ordering a round of drinks for the table.
"You know, we should try and get Brock and Nate to come next time. Not that you lovely ladies aren't great company, but I need some testosterone in the group." Elliot groaned. Layla laughed and assured him that next time she'd try and get ahold of them before hand.
"So, looks like we're about to learn if the newbie can handle her drinks." Reese said with a glimmer in her eye.
"Can't, I have to drive back. Rain check?" Kat asked. She was about average at staying sober, but she had to limit how many drinks she was going to have in order to stay alert. You never know when useful information could be revealed.
Elliot was staring at someone wearing a grey hoodie at the bar. "What the hell are you looking at, law boy?" Reese jeered. Elliot quickly turned his attention back to the table.
"Nothing. I thought I recognized that guy, but I guess not." He remarked. "Ah, thanks." He said as their drinks finally made it to the table. Kat had gotten a spiked ice tea, Layla had a cherry cocktail, Elliot just had a beer still in its bottle, and Reese had hard whiskey.
Everything was going smoothly, and Kat was enjoying learning more about the people she'd be working with for the next few weeks. Reese had taken a while to warm up to her, but soon enough Kat felt as though she made at least some progress getting to know the evasive woman.
Suddenly, Elliot leaned in towards the table and motioned the others to do so. "I think our future buddy is at the bar too. Don't make it too obvious by looking, but I think that's The Deep." Kat wasn't sure until she got a better look of the man's face, but it was indeed the Supe.
"What a loser." Reese whispered. He was just sitting by himself, and the empty bottles next to him suggested that he'd been there for a while. Layla looked at him with sympathy.
"Maybe we should invite him over here." Layla said. Everyone else at the table have her confused looks. "He's going to be working with us soon, after all."
"I don't think that's a good idea." Elliot protested, but it was too late. Layla had stood up and was walking over there.
