The rest of the day, Kat couldn't focus on her work at all. Kevin occupied all her thoughts, and it made her almost mess up some of her daily tasks. What had he been talking about? Was he okay? Who hurt him? She didn't want to make him more upset by approaching him, so she tried to avoid him as much as she could. She only saw him a few times, and he looked like he was avoiding her as well.
The tiger shark was feeling better, but they had to figure out where to put it. Whether they could keep him was debatable. Dr. Lawson was supposed to evaluate him tomorrow to see if they could send him back to his original habitat, but it would be expensive. And the aquarium was not drowning in riches. Hopefully an aquarium on teh coast could help out, but it was doubtful. If they couldn't find anyone, Dr. Lawson would go broke trying to pay for it.
At the end of the day, Kat felt confused. One look at Cole reminded her of her job. Why she was here. Suddenly Kat's morals returned to her, and she was taken aback. How could she probe into Kevin's life trying to get a story? It had been her plan at first, but earlier today she was genuinely worried about the situation. Cole sensed something was wrong when she got into the car, and he followed.
"What's wrong? Why do you look like someone just kicked your puppy?" Cole asked snarkily. Kat couldn't take the sass from him anymore and put her face in her hands.
Kat removed her hands from her face and became frustrated. "I've made a terrible mistake. I can't do this anymore. It's going to ruin his life, and I'm terrible at this! I just can't!" How could she do this to another person? No matter what he had done.
Cole was silent, until he finally spoke. "You don't understand. It's not information on The Deep we want, its the others." She didn't say anything still, and Cole sighed. "I'll give you a day to figure out if he can help us out. If you think The Deep will cooperate, tell him why we're here. If not, leave." The decision made her feel better, but what if Kevin wouldn't cooperate? What if he wouldn't even talk to her? She had to give it a shot, no matter what. She hated lying like that.
"Fine. I'll talk to him about it tomorrow, and then we'll see." Kat said, taking them home. Cole seemed unsatisfied by this.
"If you tell him and he blows my cover, I'll make sure you never work in this business or any other news source company." Cole was really serious about this case? But why? Did the sponsor he have have some kind of power over him?
When they arrived back, Kat was overwhelmed by her mind running all day. She fell asleep as soon as she hit her bed, exhausted from everything that happened throughout the day.
When Kat woke up, an unfamiliar smell filled her nose. Cooked eggs? She investigated the scent and found that Cole had cooked breakfast for the both of them. He must've learned how to do it after watching her every morning.
"Thanks." She was grateful for the gesture, maybe Cole wasn't as bad a kid as she thought he was. She didn't have time to dwell on it though, Kat needed to gain enough courage in order to talk to Kevin today. It seemed like every time she had spoken to him Kat messed things up, but she was determined to stop that from happening this time.
Once they got to work, Kat went directly to Dr. Lawson's office. Surely he'd know where the Supe could be found. "Excuse me, Doctor? Do you know where The Deep is?"
Dr. Lawson told her he was in the learning center, where the meet and greet the next day would be held. Kat had been so caught up in the last few days that she forgot the date was rapidly approaching.
Kat almost sprinted over there, while avoiding her other coworkers. When she arrived, Kevin was familiarizing himself with the toys and activities in the corner. "Can I talk to you?" She said breathlessly. He looked like he wanted to run, but she was blocking the only exit out of the room.
"Why?" He said quietly. "Why do you care so much?" This was it. She'd either reveal herself to him and lose him, or gain a powerful ally in whatever mission Cole was trying to accomplish.
"I work for the people who expose Supes. Or I'm trying to. I came here to get information on Vought. I didn't care about you." Kevin opened his mouth to say something, but Kat kept on talking. "But I didn't expect to see you like this. And I realized that I don't think you're the real enemy here. I think its Vought. If we can get enough information, we could expose the problems in the hero industry."
Kevin looked stunned, and didn't say anything at first. Kat was worried that he might never say anything to her ever again. Finally, he took a deep breath and said something. "Why would you tell me that?" he put his head in his hands. "Do you have a death wish?"
Kat shook her head. She had made the wrong choice, and now he was going to tell Vought and she and Cole would mysteriously disappear. Kat was so frozen in shock she didn't say anything. He took a deep breath and then started to speak again. "If you go after Vought, you'll die. They all do." Was he going to join her or not?
Kat became frustrated and finally said something before he could get another word in. "You don't understand. They're using you. You've been here for so long Kevin, that you'll probably never rejoin the Seven. And you must know that they're taking advantage of Supes for money and corruption."
They were at a standstill, both lost for words. Kat was so nervous, she didn't know if she could move id she even wanted to. Finally, Kat decided to say something. "Will you help me?"
